What Causes Gnats in the House?

Gnats are an annoyance. Those annoying little pests buzz around your home with no care in the world. They show up when you least expect them, wreaking havoc on your personal space.

But do you know why they are in your house? Here are a few reasons why

Your Trash Can  Gnats are attracted to moisture and strong smells, which are common in trash cans. Taking your trash out regularly will reduce the presence of gnats. 

Garbage Disposal Gnats love garbage disposal because of the constant food being tossed down there. Clean your garbage disposal regularly to keep them at bay. 

Fruits and Vegetables  Gnats love ripe fruits and vegetables. Placing them in the refrigerator to limit their presence.

Ripe Banana There is something about the sweet smell of ripe or rotted bananas that gnats love. Keep them covered or eat them as soon as they ripe to keep the gnats away.

Spills or Messes  Clean up any spills and food messes as soon as it occurs. That way they have nothing to feed off of.

Dirty Dishes  Wash any dirty dishes, pots, and pans, as gnats are attracted to soiled items.

Overwatered Houseplants Gnats are attracted to moist, damp soil and organic matter found in soil. If your soil is overwatered, they tend to gravitate towards houseplants. 

Poor Soil in Your HousePlant Using quality, well-draining soil can greatly reduce the presence of gnats. Using contaminated soil can also introduce gnats to your houseplants.

Here's How you Can Get Rid of Them

Fill a bowl with 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Then place it where the gnats are commonly present.  The solution will trap the fruit flies inside and get rid of them.

Method 1 Apple Cider Vinegar Trap

Fill a cup with red wine and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Place the bowl around the house in areas where gnats are commonly present.

Method 2   Red Wine Solution

Peppermint is a natural insect repellents.  Just  mix a few drops of the essential oil in a spray bottle. Spray the essential oil solution around your home.
