Dollar General has become one of those stores I stop at when I need a few things without wanting to make a full trip to a bigger store. The prices are usually low, the stores are convenient, and I can grab several household basics in one visit.
But I’ve also learned that a low price doesn’t automatically mean something is a good deal. Some products come in smaller packages, some don’t hold up as long, and a few can actually cost more per unit than what I’d find somewhere else.
After paying closer attention to what I was buying, I found a handful of items that consistently made sense for my budget. These are the Dollar General purchases that have become regulars on my shopping list.
Party Supplies and Gift Wrap
Gift bags, tissue paper, balloons, and wrapping paper are some of my favorite things to pick up at Dollar General.
These are items that usually get used once and tossed, so I never felt good about spending a lot on them. Now I check Dollar General before heading to a specialty store or buying them elsewhere.
I’ve found plenty of inexpensive options that look perfectly good for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. If I know I have an event coming up, I’ll sometimes grab a few extras ahead of time.

Cleaning Supplies
I’ve started checking Dollar General for everyday cleaning basics such as sponges, dish soap, and all-purpose cleaners.
I don’t buy every cleaning product there, but plenty of basic supplies work perfectly well for routine cleaning. There’s no reason for me to spend several extra dollars on something I’m going to use up in a matter of weeks.

Disposable Kitchen Items
Things like aluminum foil, plastic wrap, freezer bags, and parchment paper can quietly eat into a grocery budget.
I used to grab these wherever I happened to be shopping. Now I usually check Dollar General first. The products may not always have the thickest material or the largest package, but for everyday kitchen tasks, they’re often perfectly adequate.

Small Grocery Items
Dollar General isn’t where I do my main grocery shopping, but it comes in handy when I only need a small amount of something.
Buying a smaller package can actually save me money if I know I won’t use a larger one before it goes bad. I’d rather spend a few dollars on what I need than buy a big package just because the price per ounce looks better.
That has also helped me waste less food.
Snacks, Candy, and Drinks
This is one category where I’ve noticed some pretty easy savings.
Snacks, candy, bottled drinks, and other grab-and-go items can be expensive at convenience stores and gas stations. If I’m already near Dollar General, I’ll check there first instead of paying extra for the same type of item somewhere else.
It’s also an easy way to pick up treats for the kids without turning a small purchase into a much bigger bill.
Storage Containers and Household Basics
I don’t need expensive storage bins or specialty kitchen gadgets for most of the things I do around the house.
Dollar General has plenty of basic containers, utensils, organizers, and small household tools that are useful for everyday tasks. I’ve picked up storage pieces for closets, drawers, and cabinets without spending much.
Before buying these types of items at a larger home store, I’ve gotten into the habit of checking Dollar General first.

Personal Care Basics
Cotton pads, Q-tips, hair accessories, basic toiletries, and similar products are easy places to trim spending.
I don’t always need a particular brand for something as simple as cotton swabs or cotton pads. If a less expensive option works just as well, I’d rather keep the difference in my wallet.
Since these products are used regularly, even small savings can add up over the course of a year.
Craft Supplies
If you enjoy DIY projects or have kids who like making things, Dollar General is worth checking before buying craft supplies elsewhere.
Glue sticks, paper, paint, brushes, ribbon, jars, and small seasonal craft kits can often be found for reasonable prices. I’ve also picked up inexpensive decorations that could be turned into something completely different with a little creativity.
For projects that only require a few basic supplies, I’d rather spend a couple of dollars than buy a large craft-store package filled with things I probably won’t use.
Basic School Supplies
Notebooks, pencils, pens, folders, crayons, and markers are easy purchases at Dollar General.
School supplies have a way of disappearing around my house, so I don’t feel the need to spend a lot on them. I’ve also started keeping a few extras tucked away instead of waiting until someone suddenly needs a notebook or a pack of pencils.
That saves me from making an unnecessary trip just to buy one or two items.
Greeting Cards and Seasonal Items
Greeting cards can be surprisingly expensive, especially if you’re buying several throughout the year.
Dollar General gives me a cheaper option for birthdays, thank-you notes, holidays, and other occasions. I can find cards that look perfectly nice without spending several dollars on each one.
Seasonal decorations are another category I check. Since these items are usually displayed for a few weeks or months, I don’t feel the need to spend a lot on them.
Everyday Household Essentials
Small household items are easy to overlook when thinking about where to save money.
Batteries, tape, pens, light-duty organizers, and other basics may only cost a few dollars individually, but buying them at a higher price over and over can add up.
I used to grab these things wherever I happened to be. Now I usually check Dollar General first.
It isn’t about buying everything there. I still compare prices, package sizes, and quality before making a purchase. But after paying more attention to what I actually use around the house, I’ve found that Dollar General can be a useful place for many of the basics I buy regularly.
