10 Common Things People Store Under the Bed That They Shouldn’t

When storage space starts running out, the area under the bed can seem like the perfect place to stash extra belongings. It’s hidden, easy to reach, and often feels like wasted space waiting to be used.

The problem is that under-the-bed storage isn’t always as practical as it looks. Dust builds up quickly, airflow is limited, and items stored there are easy to forget about. What starts as a temporary storage spot can turn into a place where things sit untouched for months or even years.

Some belongings can be damaged, collect odors, attract pests, or simply become harder to keep in good condition when stored under the bed. Before sliding another box underneath, here are 10 things you should never store there, no matter how short on space you are.

Food

Even sealed snacks can attract bugs and rodents. Rodents can chew through cardboard. Bugs are attracted to sugar and starch. Even sealed plastic doesn’t guarantee protection if pests are determined.

Under the bed is not a pantry, and it’s not worth the risk of pests.

Paper, Cardboard, and Documents

Paper attracts pests and absorbs moisture. Important documents, photos, books, and cardboard boxes can easily get damaged in a dark, dusty space. Store them somewhere protected and accessible instead.

Valuable or Sentimental Items

Jewelry, heirlooms, and keepsakes deserve better than a forgotten storage spot. Heat, humidity, and dust can slowly damage important items.

Electronics

Old cords, gadgets, and devices collect dust and degrade over time. Batteries in poorly ventilated spaces can also become a safety concern. Store or recycle them properly.

Leather Goods

Leather shoes and handbags can dry out, crack, or develop mildew when stored in dusty, stagnant air. Keep them in breathable storage on shelves instead.

Weapons

Loose firearms or knives should never be tucked under a bed. Proper locked storage is the only responsible option.

Dirty Laundry

Clothes trap moisture and odors. Storing a hamper under your bed means sleeping above bacteria and stale air.

Rarely Used Items You’ve Forgotten About

If something sits under your bed untouched for years, it’s probably just clutter. That space shouldn’t become a holding zone for things you don’t actually need.

Extra Linens (Unsealed)

Blankets and sheets stored loosely will collect dust and allergens. If you must store them there, use airtight containers.

Seasonal Items

Holiday décor and off-season clothes tend to get forgotten under the bed. Clear, labeled bins stored elsewhere are usually a better long-term solution.
