Tipping has gotten more confusing than it used to be. Tip screens pop up everywhere now, even in places where people never expected to leave extra money before. For a lot of people, it can feel awkward trying to figure out when a tip is appreciated, expected, or honestly unnecessary.
Most people still want to tip fairly for good service, especially in jobs where workers rely on it. But there are also situations where skipping the tip is generally seen as acceptable, whether it’s because no real service was provided, gratuity was already included, or the request simply doesn’t match traditional tipping expectations.
This list looks at a few situations where many people feel comfortable pressing “no tip” without feeling rude about it.
When Service Is Included in the Bill
Certain restaurants automatically charge a “gratuity fee.” If you see “service included,” you don’t need to tip unless you want to give extra for extraordinary service.
When Service Is Inattentive
When the service is rude or inattentive, a tip isn’t earned, plain and simple. However, it’s a good idea to bring the issue to a manager’s attention to address the problem directly.
When Service Was Delayed Without an Apology
Extended delays in service, especially without any explanation or apology, are a clear sign of poor service. In such cases, it’s entirely within your discretion to withhold a tip.
Takeout Orders
Tipping for takeout is usually optional, as it doesn’t involve table service. However, if the service goes above and beyond, you might consider leaving a tip as a gesture of appreciation.
When the Server Ignores Your Basic Needs
Basic tasks like refilling water, delivering condiments, serving food on time, and addressing issues are expected. If these aren’t met, a tip may not be warranted.
Mandatory Service Fee
A mandatory service fee covers staff tips, especially at events or large parties. In this case, an additional tip is not necessary.
No-Tip Restaurants
Some establishments practice a “no-tipping” policy. Staff are typically paid higher wages, so withholding a tip is appropriate.
Delivery
When it comes to food delivery, some services automatically include a delivery fee. Additional tipping is not mandatory unless you feel the service was excellent.
