A family wants to use their daughter-in-law’s house for the holidays despite refusing to include her

Family gatherings are supposed to bring everyone together, but one family’s holiday plans have turned into an argument over who gets invited and who gets left out.

A man recently shared his situation on Reddit after refusing to let his parents host their annual holiday gathering at the home he shares with his wife. The problem? His family has repeatedly excluded his wife from their own celebrations, yet they still expect to use the couple’s house whenever it’s convenient.

Now his parents and siblings are accusing him of creating unnecessary family drama.

The family has never fully accepted his wife

According to the Reddit post, the 34-year-old man and his wife have been married for five years and recently purchased their first home.

While his parents were excited about the new house, their relationship with his wife has been strained for years.

He explained that his family regularly leaves her out of conversations and makes plans without including her. Although they aren’t openly hostile, he feels they’ve never treated her as an equal member of the family.

Things came to a head when his younger sister organized a birthday dinner for their mother. Everyone was invited except his wife.

When he questioned the decision, his mother explained that his sister wanted a small gathering and suggested he attend alone.

He refused.

Then his parents wanted to use their house

Just a week later, his father called with a request. The family wanted to hold its annual holiday gathering at the couple’s new home because his sister’s apartment was too small.

The man refused, saying he wasn’t comfortable hosting relatives who kept excluding his wife from family events.

His father accused him of punishing everyone over a single dinner and argued that family traditions shouldn’t be affected by personal disagreements.

His siblings also got involved, calling him controlling and suggesting he was disappointing the entire family.

But the homeowner saw things differently. He wasn’t trying to end family traditions. He simply didn’t think his relatives should expect access to a home someone refused to include them in.

His wife doesn’t want to cause a family rift

Despite everything, his wife told him she didn’t want to be responsible for damaging his relationship with his parents.

At the same time, she admitted that she was tired of being expected to overlook their behavior just to keep everyone happy.

Her husband explained that he wasn’t interested in cutting off his family. He simply wanted them to understand that treating his wife like an outsider while expecting to use their home wasn’t acceptable.

Reddit commenters had plenty to say

The post attracted hundreds of comments, with many readers supporting the husband’s decision.

Several pointed out that the house belongs to both spouses, meaning his parents shouldn’t expect to use it while disrespecting one of its owners.

Others questioned why the family couldn’t continue hosting its holiday gathering somewhere else, especially since the couple had only recently purchased the property.

Some suggested the husband stand firm on his boundaries, while others encouraged a direct conversation with his parents about how they treated his wife.

The discussion also raised a broader question about family traditions and expectations. Just because relatives have always celebrated together doesn’t mean they’re entitled to someone else’s home, particularly when there’s an ongoing conflict.

For this couple, the issue isn’t really where they’ll celebrate the holidays. It’s about whether his family will treat his wife as part of the family before expecting her to open her home to them.
