Americans are still packing up and heading south, and new moving data shows just how strong that trend remains.
Penske Truck Rental released its 16th annual Top Moving Destinations list, based on the highest volume of one-way consumer truck rentals during 2025. Houston claimed the top spot for the fifth year in a row, while Atlanta and San Antonio held onto second and third place.
The list also suggests that moving isn’t necessarily all about chasing a new job anymore. In a separate survey of 1,009 U.S. adults, 41% said they wanted a fresh start as a reason for moving, while 32% pointed to a lower cost of living.

The South Dominates the List
One of the biggest takeaways is just how heavily the rankings lean toward the South. Texas alone accounts for four of the top 10 destinations: Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, while Florida adds Orlando and Tampa.
And this isn’t simply a one-year shift. Houston has ranked No. 1 for five consecutive years, while Atlanta and San Antonio maintained the same second- and third-place positions they held the previous year. Charlotte also jumped from sixth to fourth.
Phoenix made a notable comeback, returning to the top 10 for the first time since 2021 and replacing Chicago.
Why Americans Are Packing Up
Where people move is only part of the story. Penske’s survey also looked at what is motivating Americans to relocate in the first place.
A fresh start topped the list, cited by 41% of respondents, followed by a lower cost of living at 32%. But when people were asked where they’d want to live if money weren’t an issue, lifestyle became much more important: 33% prioritized weather and 24% wanted to be closer to loved ones.
Americans also seem to want the best of both worlds from their new communities. While 61% want vibrant areas with easy access to restaurants and entertainment, nearly as many, 59%, want quiet communities with a slower pace of life.
Younger Americans appear especially interested in choosing cities around the lives they want to have. Among Gen Z respondents, 65% said it was very or extremely important for a city to align with their personal values, while 80% wanted to live somewhere fun where they could pursue their interests.
The rankings ultimately show a pretty consistent pattern. Americans may have different reasons for packing up, but when those moving trucks hit the road, many continue to head toward Texas, Florida, and other destinations across the South.
