Most people keep aluminum foil in the kitchen for the obvious reasons. It covers leftovers, lines baking sheets and keeps food wrapped up in the refrigerator.
But that inexpensive roll tucked inside the kitchen drawer can be surprisingly useful elsewhere around the house.
Messy paint trays
Cleaning sticky or dried paint from a tray can be one of the least enjoyable parts of a painting project. Press aluminum foil into the tray before adding paint, then carefully remove it when you’re finished to make cleanup much easier.
Paintbrushes drying out overnight
Stopping halfway through a painting project doesn’t necessarily mean you have to clean the brush thoroughly if you’ll be using it again soon. Wrapping the bristles tightly in aluminum foil can help keep the paint from drying out between painting sessions.
Static cling in the laundry
Dryer sheets aren’t the only option for dealing with clothes that come out of the dryer full of static. A loosely crumpled ball of aluminum foil tossed into the dryer can help reduce static and can be reused for multiple loads.
Clothes that take forever to iron
Aluminum foil reflects heat, which can help when tackling a pile of wrinkled clothes. Placing a sheet beneath the ironing board cover reflects some heat back toward the fabric and may make ironing a little more efficient.

Leftover cooking grease
Pouring cooking grease down the sink can contribute to clogged pipes, but getting rid of it can be messy. Line a heat-safe bowl with foil, let the grease cool and solidify inside it, then remove the foil for easier disposal.

Pouring without a funnel
Trying to pour something into a narrow bottle or container without a funnel can quickly create a mess. You can fold and shape aluminum foil into a temporary funnel that fits the opening.
Dull household scissors
Slightly dull scissors don’t always need replacing immediately. Folding aluminum foil into several layers and cutting through it several times can sometimes smooth minor roughness along the blades, although truly dull scissors will still need proper sharpening.

Poor lighting in dark spaces
Sometimes a flashlight or lamp doesn’t direct enough light toward the exact spot where it’s needed. Aluminum foil can act as a simple reflector to redirect light toward a darker area, as long as it’s kept safely away from hot bulbs and other heat sources.
Keeping small items dry
Small items can sometimes use an extra layer of protection from splashes or damp conditions. Wrapping them in aluminum foil can provide a temporary moisture barrier, although it shouldn’t be considered completely waterproof.
Small temporary repairs
A minor tear or hole sometimes needs a quick fix until you can make a proper repair. Folded aluminum foil can work as a temporary barrier in certain low-stress situations, but it’s best treated as a short-term fix, not a permanent repair.
