People often decide whether a garage sale is worth stopping for before they even get out of the car. If the sale looks messy, hard to find, or like there isn’t much worth browsing, they’ll likely keep driving.
Even a garage sale filled with great finds can be overlooked if it doesn’t look appealing from the street. Here are some reasons shoppers may drive right past without stopping.

The signs are impossible to follow
A sign that simply says “Yard Sale” with an arrow isn’t always enough, especially when shoppers have to make several turns to find it. Signs should be large, easy to read from a moving car and placed anywhere someone needs to make a decision about which direction to go.

The best stuff can’t be seen from the street
Furniture, bikes, tools, baskets, toys and other noticeable items can give passing shoppers a reason to pull over. When everything interesting is hidden inside the garage or pushed toward the back of the driveway, the sale can look much less promising than it actually is.
The first things they see look like junk
Broken furniture, cardboard boxes and piles of miscellaneous leftovers aren’t exactly an invitation to stop. Putting some of the better merchandise toward the front can make the entire sale look more appealing, while the less exciting stuff can stay farther back.

There’s barely anything for sale
A single folding table with a handful of items may not be enough to convince someone to find parking and get out of the car. Even when there isn’t a huge amount to sell, grouping everything together and displaying it well can make the sale look fuller and more worth browsing.
Everything looks like one giant pile
There’s a difference between a garage sale with lots to dig through and one that simply looks chaotic. Clothes dumped in heaps, overflowing boxes, and merchandise scattered across the ground can make it seem like finding anything worthwhile will take more effort than shoppers want to give.

The merchandise looks dirty
Dusty dishes, stained clothes and visibly grimy household items can make shoppers wonder about the condition of everything else at the sale. Even inexpensive secondhand items become much more appealing when they’ve been wiped down, washed or at least presented reasonably clean.
The sale looks musty or poorly stored
Shoppers can’t necessarily smell mildew from the car, but they can spot obvious signs that things haven’t been stored particularly well. Damp-looking boxes, stained textiles and dirty upholstered furniture can make an entire sale feel less appealing before anyone gets close enough to investigate.
There’s nowhere convenient to stop
Even a great-looking sale can lose shoppers if stopping requires blocking traffic, squeezing between cars or walking a long distance from the nearest available parking space. Keeping the area directly in front of the sale as clear as possible makes it easier for someone to pull over instead of keeping going.
It’s hard to tell what’s actually for sale
Bikes in the driveway, lawn equipment by the garage, and furniture on the porch might be merchandise, or they might just belong to the house. Clearly grouping sale items and separating personal belongings makes it easier for passersby to see that there’s plenty to shop.r
