Most people think of valuable collectibles as rare coins, baseball cards, or old jewelry. But some of the most valuable collectibles can be much smaller. Rare stamps have been found in old stamp albums, desk drawers, attics, and family collections that had been sitting untouched for years.
Stamp collecting has been around for more than 150 years, so there are plenty of old stamps still out there. Most aren’t worth much, but a small number have become extremely valuable because of their rarity, printing mistakes, history, or condition.
If you’ve inherited a stamp collection or enjoy browsing estate sales and flea markets, it can be worth taking a closer look at what you find. These are some of the stamps collectors have paid serious money to own.
British Guiana One-Cent Magenta
The British Guiana One-Cent Magenta is often described as the most famous stamp in the hobby. There’s a good reason for that: only one example is known to exist.
The stamp was issued in 1856 in British Guiana, now Guyana, during a shortage of regular stamps. Its unusual history and one-of-a-kind status have made it incredibly desirable to collectors.
It has sold for millions of dollars at auction, making it one of the most valuable stamps ever sold.
Red Revenue One Dollar Small
The Red Revenue stamps were issued in China in 1897 after existing revenue stamps were overprinted for postal use. Some varieties are much rarer than others, and the One Dollar Small surcharge is among the most sought-after.
Only a limited number are known to have survived, which has made this stamp a prized piece of Chinese philately.

Benjamin Franklin Z-Grill
The Benjamin Franklin Z-Grill dates back to 1868 and is one of the rarest U.S. stamps collectors can find.
The “Z-Grill” refers to the pattern pressed into the stamp’s paper to help prevent people from washing off the cancellation mark and reusing the stamp. Only two examples are known to exist.
One of those stamps was traded to collector Bill Gross in 1998 as part of a deal involving another famous rarity. Its value has been estimated in the millions.
Audrey Hepburn German Commemorative Stamp
This stamp is a much newer rarity compared with many of the others on this list. Germany produced a commemorative stamp featuring Audrey Hepburn in 2001, but it was pulled before it could be widely distributed.
The problem was the image used on the stamp. Hepburn’s son objected to the design because of the way her sunglasses were depicted.
Most of the stamps were destroyed, but a small number escaped. Those surviving examples have become highly valuable, with some selling for six-figure prices.

Inverted Jenny
Few stamp errors are as famous as the Inverted Jenny.
The 1918 U.S. airmail stamp features a Curtiss JN-4 airplane, but on a small number of stamps, the airplane was printed upside down. The sheets were quickly pulled after the mistake was discovered, but some had already reached collectors.
The error turned an otherwise ordinary stamp into one of the most famous collectibles in philately. Individual examples have sold for millions of dollars.

Inverted Dr. Sun Yat-sen Pair
Another famous printing error comes from China. A small number of stamps featuring Dr. Sun Yat-sen were printed with the central image inverted.
Because so few examples are known, the stamps have become highly sought after by collectors of Chinese postage. A genuine pair in good condition can be worth a great deal of money.
As with any rare stamp, authenticity and condition matter a lot, so collectors usually rely on expert certification before making a major purchase.
2-Cent George Washington Carmine Vertical Coil
This George Washington stamp from the early 1900s doesn’t look particularly unusual at first.
The rarity comes from the vertical coil format and the small number of surviving examples. Finding one in excellent condition is difficult, which has made it a favorite among serious U.S. stamp collectors.
If you come across old rolls, albums, or loose stamps from this period, don’t assume the ordinary-looking ones are worthless. Some of the rarest stamps aren’t easy to spot without knowing exactly what to look for.
Canadian 12d Black Empress
The 12d Black Empress was issued by Canada in 1851 and features a portrait of Queen Victoria.
It was used for international mail and is one of Canada’s best-known early stamps. Fewer than 150 examples are thought to survive, and stamps in especially good condition can bring very high prices.
Its age, limited surviving supply, and place in Canadian postal history make it one of the country’s most desirable stamps.

Hawaiian Missionaries Stamp
The Hawaiian Missionaries date back to the 1850s and were among the first postage stamps issued in the Hawaiian Islands.
They were printed on thin paper and used during Hawaii’s early postal history. Many were damaged or lost over the years, so surviving examples are rare.
Collectors prize these stamps because of their age and connection to early Hawaii. Some examples have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Treskilling Yellow
The Treskilling Yellow is another stamp that became famous because of a printing mistake.
The Swedish stamp was supposed to be printed in blue-green, but one known example was printed in yellow. Nobody knows exactly how the error happened, but that mistake made the stamp incredibly rare.
The Treskilling Yellow has changed hands for millions of dollars and remains one of the best-known rarities in stamp collecting.
If you have an old stamp collection sitting in a drawer or inherited one from a family member, it’s worth taking a closer look before giving it away. Most old stamps won’t make you rich, but rare colors, printing errors, unusual markings, and scarce varieties can make a tiny piece of paper surprisingly valuable.
