I’ll admit it, I used to throw all kinds of little household items into my Amazon cart without giving them much thought. I’d add a couple of storage bins, a vase, some gift bags, cleaning supplies, or whatever else I happened to need. By the time I reached checkout, those small purchases had turned into a much bigger bill than I expected.

That changed when I started paying more attention to what was available at Dollar Tree. Not everything there is a better deal, and I still compare prices for some things, but I’ve found plenty of basic household items that don’t need to cost much. Now, before I place an online order for something simple, I usually check Dollar Tree first.

Dishware

When I need an extra plate, bowl, or serving dish, Dollar Tree is one of the first places I look. The basic designs are perfectly fine for everyday meals, family gatherings, parties, or for keeping a few extra pieces on hand in case something breaks. I’ve also found them useful for rental properties or guest spaces where I don’t want to spend a lot replacing individual dishes.

The selection can change from store to store, so I don’t always find exactly what I’m looking for. Still, if I need something simple and inexpensive, it’s worth checking the kitchen aisle before ordering a single plate or bowl online.

Mugs

Mugs are another item that can quietly eat into a shopping budget. One mug doesn’t seem expensive, but buying several at once can add up to a surprisingly large purchase, especially if you’re trying to stock a kitchen or replace a few that have broken.

Dollar Tree often carries basic mugs, as well as seasonal designs and fun patterns. They’re useful for everyday coffee or tea, and I don’t have to worry too much about spending a lot on something I’ll likely use every morning.

Drinking Glasses

I don’t see much reason to spend a lot on basic drinking glasses unless I’m looking for a particular style or set. If I’m replacing a few that have broken or need extra glasses for guests, Dollar Tree is usually one of the first places I check.

They’re also handy when you’re furnishing a first apartment or setting up a new kitchen on a budget. For everyday water, juice, or iced tea, a simple glass does the job just fine.

Candles and Candle Holders

Decorative candles and candle holders can get expensive quickly at home décor stores, especially if you’re buying several pieces for a table or seasonal display. Dollar Tree gives me a way to put together those little decorating projects without spending much on each item.

I like using inexpensive candle holders for dinner tables, holiday displays, and small arrangements around the house. If my decorating ideas change later, I don’t feel like I’ve wasted much money on pieces I no longer want to use.

Hair Accessories

Hair ties have a strange way of disappearing around the house. I’ll buy a pack, use a few, and then somehow the rest seem to vanish when I actually need one.

That’s why I don’t spend much on basic hair accessories. Dollar Tree often has hair ties, clips, headbands, combs, and other everyday items that are easy to grab when I need replacements. For something that gets lost or worn out so easily, inexpensive options make sense to me.

Seasonal Decor

I enjoy decorating for holidays, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money on decorations that will sit in a storage box for most of the year. A few small purchases can add up quickly when you’re shopping at regular home décor stores.

Dollar Tree makes it easier to change up my decorations without spending a big chunk of the budget. I’ll check there for seasonal signs, table decorations, ornaments, ribbons, and other small pieces before paying more elsewhere.

Storage Containers

Storage containers are another category where an online shopping cart can get out of hand. You start with one bin for the pantry, and suddenly you’re looking at baskets for the bathroom, containers for the closet, and boxes for the craft room.

Dollar Tree has plenty of basic bins, baskets, and containers for those little organizing jobs around the house. They may not have the same look as more expensive storage pieces, but they can be perfectly useful for keeping small items together and making clutter easier to manage.

Arts and Crafts Supplies

I don’t see much reason to spend a lot on basic craft supplies for simple projects. If I’m helping with a school project, putting together an activity for the kids, or trying a small DIY project, Dollar Tree is one of the first places I check.

Glue, paint, poster board, stickers, craft sticks, markers, and similar supplies are often available for much less than specialty versions. For projects that don’t require a particular brand or type of material, the inexpensive supplies usually do what I need.

Gift Bags and Wrapping Supplies

Gift wrapping is one of those expenses that can feel a little silly once you think about how quickly the wrapping ends up in the trash. Spending several dollars on a gift bag or a roll of wrapping paper doesn’t make much sense to me when I need several at once.

Dollar Tree carries gift bags, tissue paper, bows, ribbons, and wrapping paper in a range of colors and designs. I can stock up before birthdays and holidays without turning the wrapping supplies into a separate expense that eats into my gift budget.

Notebooks

I go through notebooks for all sorts of little things, from grocery lists and meal planning to project notes and random ideas I don’t want to forget. I don’t need a premium notebook for most of those jobs, so I usually look for inexpensive ones first.

Dollar Tree’s notebooks work well for everyday writing and keeping lists around the house. I can keep one in the kitchen, another at my desk, and a few extras in a drawer without feeling like I’ve spent too much on paper products.

Greeting Cards

Greeting cards have gotten surprisingly expensive, especially if you have several birthdays, holidays, and other occasions to shop for throughout the year. A card can end up costing almost as much as a small gift, which makes me much more careful about where I buy them.

Dollar Tree is one of the easiest places to save on cards while still finding plenty of choices. I like keeping a few birthday, thank-you, and general cards at home so I’m not scrambling to find one at the last minute.

Party Supplies

Party supplies can add up before you even get to the food. Plates, cups, napkins, balloons, table decorations, and other little extras can turn a simple gathering into a much more expensive event.

Dollar Tree is useful for picking up those basic supplies in one trip. If I’m hosting a birthday party, holiday gathering, or casual get-together, I’ll check there first for anything that doesn’t need to be particularly fancy.

Candy

Candy is another item I like to price-check before buying. If I’m putting together treat bags, getting ready for a holiday, filling a candy bowl, or planning a movie night, I don’t want to spend more than I have to on snacks.

Dollar Tree often has familiar candy brands along with smaller packages and seasonal options. Package sizes can vary, so I still check the amount I’m getting before deciding it’s a better deal, but it’s usually worth taking a look before ordering candy online.

Cleaning Supplies

I don’t buy every cleaning product at Dollar Tree, but I do find plenty of basic supplies there that I don’t need to spend much money on. Sponges, scrub brushes, cleaning gloves, spray bottles, microfiber cloths, and other small tools are some of the things I tend to pick up.

For specialty cleaners, I still shop around and buy the products I know work well for a particular job. But for basic cleaning tools that get used, dirty, and replaced regularly, Dollar Tree can save me from adding another small order to my Amazon cart.
