Certain quarters are worth far more than 25 cents. A low mintage, a mint error, or a unique variety can turn an ordinary-looking coin into one collectors are eager to own. While many of these coins are extremely rare, a few have been found in circulation, tucked away in old collections, or hiding in jars of spare change.

2000-P Maryland Quarter Mule with Sacagawea Dollar
This unusual error coin was created when the front of a Sacagawea dollar was paired with the reverse of a Maryland state quarter. It was never supposed to leave the Mint, making it one of the most famous modern coin errors.
Experts believe only about 100 to 200 examples exist. Depending on condition, these coins have sold for anywhere from around $1,000 to well over $10,000.

1822 Capped Bust Quarter
The 1822 Capped Bust Quarter is one of the toughest early U.S. quarters to find. Just over 1,000 are believed to survive today, making it a prized coin for serious collectors.
Lower-grade examples can still sell for impressive amounts, while high-grade pieces have reached more than $180,000 at auction.
1927-S Full Head Standing Liberty Quarter
The San Francisco Mint struck fewer than 400,000 of these quarters, making them scarce from the start. Coins with a fully detailed Liberty’s head, known as the “Full Head” designation, are especially difficult to find.
Well-preserved examples regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars, and top-graded coins have brought around $175,000 at auction.
1955 Doubled Die Obverse Quarter
This variety features noticeable doubling on the words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust.” The error occurred during the creation of the coin dies, giving the lettering a bold doubled appearance.
Collectors pay a premium for clear examples. Many sell between $2,000 and $5,000, with outstanding pieces bringing even more.

1932-D Washington Quarter
The 1932-D marked the first year of the Washington Quarter series, and its low mintage of just 436,800 makes it one of the key dates.
Circulated examples often sell for hundreds of dollars, while attractive uncirculated coins can bring several thousand dollars or more.
1937 Doubled Die Obverse Washington Quarter
This coin shows strong doubling on Washington’s portrait and parts of the lettering. It’s one of the better-known doubled die varieties in the Washington Quarter series.
High-grade examples have sold for more than $30,000, while circulated pieces still attract strong prices from collectors.
1872-CC Liberty Seated Quarter
Coins from the Carson City Mint have long been favorites with collectors, and the 1872-CC is no exception. With only about 22,850 struck, surviving examples are difficult to find.
Depending on condition, values often range from several thousand dollars to well over $20,000.
1844 Proof Liberty Seated Quarter
Proof coins from the mid-1800s were produced in very limited numbers, and the 1844 Proof Liberty Seated Quarter is among the rarest.
Only a handful are known today. Exceptional examples have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, making this one of the most desirable proof quarters ever made.

2004-D Wisconsin Quarter Extra Leaf High
This popular error features an extra leaf on the ear of corn on the reverse. The added leaf wasn’t part of the original design and quickly caught collectors’ attention.
Nice examples often sell for several hundred dollars, while top-condition coins have exceeded $2,500.
2009-D District of Columbia DDR Quarter
This doubled die reverse variety shows noticeable doubling on parts of the reverse lettering, including “District of Columbia.”
Circulated examples are affordable, but well-preserved coins can sell for several hundred dollars. The finest graded examples have brought more than $3,000.
2005-P Minnesota Extra Tree Quarter
One of the most talked-about State Quarter errors, this variety appears to show an extra tree near the forest on the reverse. Several die varieties exist, with some being scarcer than others.
Values vary widely, but better examples often sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, especially in high grades.
1896-S Barber Quarter
The 1896-S Barber Quarter is a key date in the Barber series. While more than one million were struck, relatively few survive in excellent condition.
Collectors regularly pay several thousand dollars for attractive examples, with the finest coins selling for much more.
2020-W Salt River Bay Quarter
As part of the America the Beautiful program, the West Point Mint released a limited number of quarters with a “W” mint mark into circulation. The Salt River Bay design is one of those issues.
Many examples are worth between $10 and $100, while coins in outstanding condition can sell for higher amounts.
1840-O No Drapery Liberty Seated Quarter
This New Orleans issue comes from an early version of the Liberty Seated design before drapery was added to Liberty’s elbow.
Collectors value the coin for both its history and scarcity. High-grade pieces have sold for five- and six-figure prices.
1873-CC No Arrows Liberty Seated Quarter
The 1873-CC No Arrows Quarter was struck just before the Mint changed the weight standard for quarters later that year. Very few were produced, and surviving examples are exceptionally rare.
Collectors often pay tens of thousands of dollars for this issue, with the best-known coins bringing far higher prices.
1983-P Spitting Eagle Quarter
This variety gets its nickname from a raised die crack that appears to extend from the eagle’s beak, creating the appearance that the bird is “spitting.”
Although more affordable than many classic rarities, well-preserved examples remain popular with error coin collectors and can sell for several hundred dollars, with exceptional pieces bringing more.
