9 Things That Should Never See the Inside of Your Dishwasher

The dishwasher feels like a miracle some days. Load it up, push a button, walk away. But just because something fits in the dishwasher doesn’t mean it belongs there.

Over time, tossing the wrong items into a hot, high-pressure wash cycle can dull blades, warp wood, strip coatings, and even damage the dishwasher itself. A few minutes of handwashing can save you from having to replace expensive kitchen tools later.

Here are 9 things that should never see the inside of your dishwasher, no matter how tempting it is.

Cast Iron Cookware

Cast iron and dishwashers are not friends. The harsh detergent and prolonged exposure to water will strip the seasoning, leaving the surface vulnerable to rust.

That glossy, well-seasoned finish takes time to build. One dishwasher cycle can undo it. Let cast iron cool, rinse with warm water, scrub gently, dry thoroughly, and lightly oil before storing.

Fine China and Crystal

Even if it says dishwasher safe, delicate china and crystal are better off in the sink. High heat and strong water pressure can cause tiny fractures, dull finishes, and eventual chipping.

If it’s special enough to save for holidays, it’s special enough to wash by hand.

Insulated Travel Mugs

Many insulated tumblers rely on a sealed air gap between layers to regulate temperature. Dishwasher heat can compromise that seal, reducing the mug’s ability to keep drinks hot or cold.

Hand-washing the interior and lid to extend their lifespan, especially if they are investment pieces.

Gold, Brass, or Bronze Flatware

Warm-toned metals don’t hold up well in the dishwasher. Detergent and high heat can cause discoloration, fading, or tarnish.

If you want those pieces to stay vibrant rather than dull and worn, wash and dry them by hand.

A soft sponge and mild soap are far gentler and help preserve the coating longer.

Graters and Strainers

Dishwashers don’t do a great job cleaning the tiny holes in graters and mesh strainers. Food particles often stay lodged inside.

Repeated cycles can also dull sharp grating edges. A quick rinse immediately after use is usually faster and far more effective.
