After hours in airports, traffic, or on the road, getting to the hotel can feel like the best part of the day. Most people walk in, drop their bags on the bed, turn on the lights, and start making themselves at home.
Some experienced travelers do things a little differently. Before unpacking or getting comfortable, they take a few minutes to look around the room. They may leave the main lights off and use a flashlight or their phone to check the areas around the bed.
The reason is simple: they want to rule out bed bugs before their belongings have a chance to become part of the problem.

Why Some Travelers Keep the Room Dim at First
Leaving the room dim while using a flashlight may seem like an odd hotel habit, but it gives travelers a focused way to inspect specific areas instead of relying on the room’s overhead lighting.
The goal isn’t to spend half an hour searching every corner. A quick check around the bed, mattress seams, headboard, and nearby furniture can take only a few minutes and may reveal signs that deserve attention.
Where Bed Bugs Usually Hide
Bed bugs aren’t always easy to spot. During the day, they tend to stay hidden in places close to where people sleep, including mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, upholstered furniture, and small cracks.
Look for tiny dark spots, reddish stains, shed skins, eggs, or live insects. None of these signs should be ignored if you notice them in a hotel room.

Don’t Put Your Luggage on the Bed Right Away
Dropping a suitcase on the bed is almost automatic after checking into a hotel. It’s also one habit some experienced travelers avoid until they’ve looked over the room.
If bed bugs are present, placing luggage on upholstered furniture or the bed gives them another opportunity to get into your belongings. Keeping your suitcase on a hard, elevated surface or another location away from the bed while you inspect the room can be a reasonable precaution.
Check the Headboard Too
The mattress gets most of the attention during a bed bug check, but the headboard deserves a look too. Bed bugs tend to stay close to sleeping areas, and headboards can have plenty of small gaps and protected spots where they can hide.
Use your flashlight to check along the edges, behind the headboard if it’s accessible, and around any areas where it attaches to the wall or bed frame.

What to Do If You Spot Something Suspicious
If you find what looks like evidence of bed bugs, don’t start unpacking. Keep your luggage closed and take a few clear photos of what you found.
Contact the front desk or hotel manager and explain what you noticed. If possible, avoid moving your belongings around the room until you’ve spoken with hotel staff. The hotel can inspect the room and tell you what options are available, which may include moving you to another room.
A quick room check may feel unnecessary after a long day of travel, but it can be a small habit that gives you some extra peace of mind before settling in. Spending a few minutes checking the bed and surrounding area is far easier than discovering a problem after you’ve unpacked everything.
