I’ve spent enough time in thrift stores to know that certain things are worth looking for at different times of the year. And when autumn rolls around, my shopping list changes quite a bit.
I’m looking for cozy sweaters, good-quality jackets, fall decorations, and anything that can make my home feel a little warmer without spending a fortune. It’s also a great time to start thinking ahead to Thanksgiving and the holidays, especially if you’re planning to host.
The best part is that you don’t necessarily need to buy anything specifically labeled as fall decor. Some of my favorite seasonal finds are everyday secondhand items you can use year-round.
Here’s what I’m keeping an eye out for at thrift stores this autumn.

Cozy Sweaters and Cardigans
One of the first places I’m heading is the sweater section. I’m especially interested in wool, cashmere, and chunky-knit cardigans that would cost significantly more new.
I always check the fabric tag before buying and look closely for holes, stains, and excessive pilling. A little pilling usually comes off with a fabric shaver, but I generally pass on anything that needs major repairs.
Leather Boots and Belts
Good-quality leather accessories are some of my favorite secondhand buys, especially as the weather cools.
I look for leather ankle boots, loafers, and belts in good condition. Some just need a little cleaning or leather conditioner to look great again. Don’t forget to check both the men’s and women’s accessory sections, because you never know what you’ll find.
Fall and Halloween Decorations
I rarely pay full price for seasonal decorations when thrift stores have so many interesting options.
I’m always looking for ceramic pumpkins, vintage candleholders, wreaths, and anything that could work for Halloween with a little creativity. Black frames, old glass bottles, and unusual serving dishes can easily become Halloween decorations without looking like something purchased from a seasonal aisle.
Brass Candleholders
I almost always stop to inspect brass candleholders at a thrift store. They look beautiful on a dining table, mantel, or bookshelf, especially during fall when I’m decorating with warmer colors.
I prefer mixing different heights and styles rather than buying a matching set, and they work just as well during the holidays.
Woven Baskets
If there’s one section I rarely skip, it’s the basket aisle. Woven baskets are useful all year, but I especially like them for fall decorating.
A larger basket can hold throw blankets, while smaller ones are great for displaying pumpkins, pinecones, or seasonal greenery. I always check for broken weaving, stains, and musty smells before buying.
Vintage Artwork and Picture Frames
I’m a big fan of thrifted artwork, and autumn is a great excuse to look for pieces with warmer colors and interesting frames.
Small landscape paintings, floral prints, and vintage-looking artwork can add character to a room without requiring a complete decorating overhaul. I also look for ornate frames that I can reuse with artwork I already own.

Wooden Bowls and Cutting Boards
Wooden bowls, trays, and cutting boards are some of the easiest secondhand finds to incorporate into fall decorating.
I like using wooden bowls for seasonal displays and leaning decorative cutting boards against a kitchen backsplash. Just inspect them for cracks, odors, and damage, especially if you plan to use them for food preparation.
Vintage Dishes and Serving Pieces
With Thanksgiving and holiday gatherings approaching, I always spend a little extra time looking through the dishes.
Vintage serving platters, ceramic bowls, glassware, and interesting plates can make a holiday table feel more personal. I like mixing secondhand pieces with dishes I already own rather than trying to find a full matching set.
Tablecloths, Napkins, and Other Linens
The linen section is easy to overlook, but it’s one of my favorite places to find inexpensive home decor.
I look for tablecloths, cloth napkins, runners, and even curtains in colors that work well during autumn. Deep greens, browns, creams, and warm reds are especially nice, and some pieces can easily double as Christmas decor.
Vintage Books
I also like to look for old books, especially those with beautiful covers or interesting illustrations.
A few stacked books can look great on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantel alongside other thrifted decorations. I tend to gravitate toward older hardcovers in brown, burgundy, green, and other colors that work with my fall decor.

Jackets and Coats
Autumn is a good time to start checking the outerwear racks, even if the weather hasn’t gotten particularly cold yet.
I’m looking for denim jackets, wool coats, leather jackets, and sturdy workwear that can last for years. I pay attention to the brand, fabric, lining, and overall condition because a well-made secondhand coat can be a much better purchase than a cheaper new one.
Extra Dining Chairs
This might seem unusual to shop for in autumn, but it’s worth considering if you regularly host family gatherings.
Instead of buying temporary seating for Thanksgiving or the holidays, I like the idea of finding sturdy wooden dining chairs you can use year-round. They don’t necessarily need to match your existing furniture, either. A mix of similar wood tones or styles can look intentional.
Holiday Gift Supplies
I know it might feel early to think about Christmas shopping, but I start paying closer attention to the gift and craft sections in autumn.
Gift bags, baskets, ribbon, unopened craft supplies, and decorative boxes can all come in handy during the holidays. I also keep an eye out for secondhand items that would make thoughtful gifts, especially vintage pieces or books that suit someone’s interests.
