Target Is Turning to Pokémon as It Tries to Win Back Customers

Target has had a rough couple of years, facing public backlash, boycotts, and criticism over some of its corporate decisions. The controversy surrounding its diversity and inclusion policies, in particular, has put the retailer in an uncomfortable position as it tries to win back shoppers and rebuild customer loyalty.

With consumers already more selective about where they spend their money, Target has plenty of reasons to give people something worth coming back for. One area getting a lot of attention is Pokémon, with the retailer leaning into collectibles, exclusive merchandise, and popular toys to bring some excitement back to its stores.

Target Is Betting on Pokémon’s Popularity

Pokémon has become a bright spot for Target, with the retailer reporting record customer engagement tied to the brand in its second-quarter earnings update.

To build on that interest, Target launched an exclusive collection celebrating Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, featuring more than 100 products across clothing, toys, accessories, and home goods. According to Target, nearly half of the initial collection was priced under $20, giving fans an affordable reason to visit its stores.

Why Pokémon Could Help Bring Shoppers Back

Pokémon has a loyal following that goes well beyond kids. Adults who grew up collecting the cards now buy merchandise for themselves and their children, giving Target a chance to appeal to shoppers of all ages.

Limited-time collections also give fans a reason to visit stores instead of waiting for their next regular shopping trip. And once they’re there, they may end up browsing other departments or picking up a few things they hadn’t planned to buy.

Target Is Putting More Focus on Toys and Collectibles

Pokémon is part of Target’s larger effort to attract shoppers through toys, collectibles, and entertainment merchandise. The retailer has also highlighted popular brands like LEGO and expanded its selection of affordable gifts.

For shoppers watching their budgets, a small toy or collectible may be easier to justify than a new piece of furniture or an expensive home purchase. Target hopes these products will keep customers interested, even when they’re spending less in other departments.

Target Is Making a Bigger Push for Holiday Shoppers

Target is carrying that same strategy into the holiday shopping season. The retailer also revealed more than 1,000 toys priced under $10, along with a list of 50 popular toys featuring brands like Pokémon, LEGO, Barbie, and Nintendo.

Target is also offering an expanded digital holiday catalog with nearly 500 toys, games, and gifts. The idea is to make it easier for families to discover new products and find affordable gifts, whether they’re browsing online or shopping in stores.

Will Pokémon Be Enough to Win Back Shoppers?

Target has plenty of work ahead as it tries to rebuild customer loyalty and give people more reasons to shop there. Pokémon’s popularity is encouraging, but selling more collectibles won’t necessarily solve the retailer’s larger challenges.

Still, the strategy makes sense. Target knows shoppers have plenty of places to buy everyday essentials, so exclusive merchandise and popular brands could help make its stores worth visiting again. And if Pokémon fans are already showing up for the latest releases, Target has a reason to keep investing in what they’re buying.
