Costco is known for its bulk deals, oversized packages, and prices that make buying more seem like a smart way to save money. But what happens when you’re shopping for just one person and don’t need 20 rolls of paper towels or enough groceries to feed a family of six?
That’s the conversation happening on Reddit, where one shopper made an interesting comparison between two popular grocery stores.
“I’m single, so I never go to Costco because I don’t need stuff in bulk, but TJ’s is my Costco cause the portion sizes are great for single people,” the Reddit user explained.
The shopper acknowledged that the stores aren’t exactly the same but pointed out that both offer good value and interesting products. And judging by the responses, plenty of people understood exactly what they meant.

Why Trader Joe’s Makes Sense for Smaller Households
One of the biggest advantages shoppers mentioned was buying smaller quantities without worrying about where to store everything or whether the food would spoil before they could finish it.
One commenter summed it up perfectly: “If I can only eat 5oz of something before it goes bad, it’s smarter to buy it for $4 at TJ than 10oz for $5 at Costco.”
It’s a good reminder that buying in bulk doesn’t always save you money. A lower price per ounce might look like a bargain, but if half the food ends up in the trash, those savings disappear pretty quickly.
Other shoppers appreciated being able to try new products without committing to oversized packages. For someone living alone or in a small apartment, that convenience can make a big difference.
But Costco Shoppers Weren’t Ready to Give Up Their Memberships
Not everyone agreed that Costco was impractical for single people. Several commenters said they shop at both stores, explaining that Costco still makes sense for household essentials, frozen foods, and items they use regularly.
Some pointed to gas savings, while others mentioned stocking up on toilet paper, coffee, medications, and freezer-friendly foods. One shopper even explained that they buy a Costco membership every other year and stock up on long-lasting products.
Of course, storage space matters, too. One commenter described having to spread a large package of toilet paper throughout their home because there wasn’t enough room to keep it all in one place.
So, Which Store Actually Saves You More Money?
Costco can offer excellent value when you’re buying products you’ll actually use, especially nonperishables and foods you can freeze. But for people who live alone, have limited storage, or prefer smaller portions, Trader Joe’s may be the more practical choice.
