For a while, I was pretty sure switching from Costco to Sam’s Club was the smarter move.

The membership cost less, the stores often felt less crowded, and Scan & Go made quick trips much easier. For a few months, I was happy with the switch. Then little things started adding up. I found myself missing certain Costco products, stopping by less often at Sam’s Club, and eventually wondering why I had left Costco in the first place.

Both warehouse clubs have plenty going for them. They offer bulk groceries, household supplies, electronics, furniture, seasonal items, and food courts that can turn a routine shopping trip into lunch.

After spending time shopping at both, though, I realized that the cheapest membership or shortest checkout line wasn’t the only thing I cared about. The products I bought most often, the quality I got for my money, and the overall shopping experience mattered too.

Here’s what made me leave Costco for Sam’s Club and what eventually brought me back.

Sam’s Club Made Quick Trips Easier

The convenience was probably the biggest reason I liked Sam’s Club at first.

The parking lots often felt easier to deal with, the stores seemed less crowded, and Scan & Go was incredibly handy. Being able to scan everything on my phone and skip the traditional checkout line made a huge difference when I only needed a few things.

Costco trips could be a different story, especially on weekends. Crowded aisles, packed carts, and long checkout lines could make a quick grocery run feel like a much bigger event than I had planned.

For someone who values speed, Sam’s Club has a real advantage here.

Then I Started Missing Kirkland Signature

After a few months away, I was surprised by how many Kirkland Signature products I missed.

Coffee, olive oil, batteries, paper products, pantry staples, and plenty of other household items had become regular purchases for me. I had gotten used to the quality and knew which products I could buy without giving them much thought.

Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark products are good too, but I found myself preferring certain Kirkland items. A few products just tasted better to me, while others seemed to last longer.

That was one of the first signs that I might not be done with Costco after all.

Costco’s Produce and Bakery Won Me Back

The grocery sections also made a difference.

I usually found Costco’s produce selection reliable, and the bakery was hard to ignore. The muffins, croissants, cookies, and other baked goods became things I actually missed after switching stores.

Sam’s Club has plenty of good grocery options, but Costco felt more consistent with the foods I regularly bought.

Sometimes it’s the small things that make you realize you have a favorite store.

I Missed the Costco Food Court

I didn’t expect the food court to matter much in my decision, but I missed it.

The $1.50 hot dog and drink combo is probably the first thing most people think of, but Costco has more than that. Pizza, chicken bakes, smoothies, cookies, and other treats make stopping for something to eat part of the experience.

Sam’s Club has its own cafe and plenty of affordable choices, but I personally preferred Costco’s selection.

It sounds like a small reason to switch warehouse clubs, but when you shop somewhere regularly, those little extras start to matter.

Costco Felt Better for Big Purchases

My preference became even clearer once I started looking at electronics and appliances again.

Costco’s warranty and return benefits on many purchases gave me more confidence with expensive items. If I was buying a television, laptop, or major kitchen appliance, I liked having those policies behind the purchase.

Sam’s Club had competitive prices, but Costco gave me more peace of mind for certain large purchases.

That mattered more to me than I expected.

Costco Had More of the Specialty Foods I Wanted

I also noticed that Costco fit my grocery preferences a little better.

There was a wider selection of organic foods and specialty products that I regularly looked for, including snacks, frozen foods, pantry items, and produce.

Sam’s Club has added plenty of organic choices over the years, so this isn’t a knock on its selection. I just found more of what I wanted at Costco.

Costco’s Meat Department Was a Big Plus

The difference became especially noticeable during grilling season.

I liked the variety of steaks, roasts, seafood, and other meats at Costco. There were plenty of options for larger meals and gatherings, and the prices were often close enough to Sam’s Club that quality became the deciding factor for me.

I’m sure shoppers will have different opinions here, but Costco’s meat department worked better for my shopping habits.

I Missed the Random Costco Finds

There’s also something fun about walking into Costco without knowing exactly what you’ll find.

You might go in for toilet paper and leave with imported chocolate, a giant houseplant, patio furniture, seasonal decorations, or a sweatshirt you never planned to buy.

Sam’s Club can have plenty of interesting finds too, but I found Costco’s changing selection more entertaining. Some trips felt like browsing a store and a warehouse sale at the same time.

That unpredictability was something I didn’t realize I enjoyed until it was gone.

Costco Gas Became Another Reason to Return

At first, I figured the gas stations at both warehouse clubs were basically interchangeable.

After going back to Costco, I started paying more attention to the prices and the fuel quality. Costco’s gas is Top Tier certified, and the prices were often low enough that filling up there made sense for me.

The lines can be long, especially during busy periods, so it isn’t always the fastest option. Still, if I was already nearby and needed gas, the savings were enough to make stopping worthwhile.

I Preferred Costco’s Home and Seasonal Sections

Costco also pulled me back with its seasonal merchandise.

Spring meant patio furniture, gardening supplies, and outdoor items. Around the holidays, the store would fill up with decorations, gifts, food, and other seasonal products.

Sam’s Club has plenty of similar merchandise, but I usually preferred what I found at Costco. The selection felt more in line with my taste, particularly for home goods and seasonal purchases.

I Liked the Atmosphere at Costco More

This one is harder to measure, but I noticed it.

The Costco stores I visited often felt organized and the employees seemed helpful and friendly. I also liked the general atmosphere inside the stores.

Costco is known for its employee pay and benefits, and I felt that showed in my shopping experience. That doesn’t mean every Costco employee or store is the same, but my experiences were usually positive.

Sam’s Club Still Does Plenty Right

Going back to Costco didn’t suddenly make me dislike Sam’s Club.

I still think Sam’s Club has some real advantages. Scan & Go is excellent. The membership can cost less. The stores often feel easier to get through, and shoppers who care most about convenience may prefer it.

For me, though, Costco won out in the areas I cared about most.

I missed Kirkland Signature products. I preferred Costco’s bakery, meat, produce, and specialty food selection. The return and warranty benefits made larger purchases feel easier. I liked the seasonal merchandise, the gas prices, and, yes, even the food court.

After spending several months with Sam’s Club, I realized I wasn’t actually saving enough or enjoying the experience enough to make the switch permanent.

So I went back to Costco. And this time, I’m pretty happy I did.
