Buying your first home should be exciting. You finally have a place to call your own, and you’re looking forward to settling in, getting comfortable, and enjoying everything homeownership brings.
But for one couple, that excitement didn’t last very long. Just weeks after moving in, they found themselves dealing with a neighbor’s dog that wouldn’t stop barking in the middle of the night. And despite their efforts to resolve the situation, they haven’t had much luck.
The frustrated homeowner shared their experience in a Reddit community.

The Barking Started Shortly After They Moved In
According to the homeowner, she and her husband had been living in their first house for about a month when they shared their story. The trouble began about a week after they moved in.
Their neighbors, an older couple who live behind them, have a German shepherd that reportedly barks late at night, often around 2 or 3 a.m.
The barking is loud enough to wake them inside their bedroom, leaving the couple struggling with interrupted sleep almost every night.
The homeowner explained that she loves dogs and understands that barking is normal. But being woken up repeatedly in the middle of the night has made it hard to enjoy their new home.
Their Neighbors Told Them to Pray About It
Hoping to resolve the situation peacefully, the homeowner approached the neighbors about the barking.
That’s when she learned that the dog apparently belongs to the older couple’s adult son, who doesn’t live at the property.
Rather than offering a clear solution, the neighbors reportedly told her to pray about the situation and said things would eventually improve.
The homeowner wasn’t particularly reassured by that response. She explained that she wasn’t criticizing anyone’s religious beliefs but was hoping for something more practical, especially since the barking was affecting her sleep.
The neighbors also claimed they had already tried everything they could to quiet the dog.
The Dog’s Living Conditions Raised Another Concern
As frustrating as the barking has been, the homeowner is also worried about the dog’s well-being.
She claims the German shepherd spends nearly all its time confined in an outdoor crate, with very little opportunity to move around or interact with people.
She suspects the dog’s constant barking may be linked to its living conditions.
The homeowner contacted animal control to investigate. However, according to her account, officers found that the dog had food, water, and shelter and wasn’t visibly malnourished. They reportedly found insufficient evidence to take further action.
That left the homeowner feeling stuck. She still lost sleep and remained concerned about the animal.

Reddit Users Had Plenty to Say
Many readers expressed sympathy for both the couple and the dog.
Several commenters suggested that the homeowner continue documenting the barking and contact local authorities about possible noise violations.
Others pointed out that different departments may handle animal welfare and noise complaints, depending on where someone lives.
Several commenters also encouraged the homeowner to contact a local humane society or German shepherd rescue organization to see whether additional help might be available.
What Can Homeowners Do About a Neighbor’s Constantly Barking Dog?
Dealing with a barking dog can be especially difficult when you’ve already spoken with the owner, and nothing has changed.
In many communities, excessive barking may fall under local noise or nuisance ordinances. However, the rules vary, including how long a dog must bark before it qualifies as a violation.
Keeping a written record of the dates, times, and duration of the barking can help establish a pattern. Audio or video recordings may also be useful when filing a complaint.
Homeowners can check with their local animal control department, code enforcement office, or police non-emergency line to find out which agency handles barking complaints.
If you have concerns about an animal’s living conditions, report them separately to the appropriate animal welfare authorities.
And when conversations with neighbors aren’t getting anywhere, community mediation services may offer another way to address the problem without immediately turning to legal action.
