There was a time when leaving the house often meant changing into something a little nicer. People had clothes for church, dinner, traveling, and special outings, and even relatively ordinary activities could feel like an occasion.
That’s certainly changed. Comfortable clothes have become much more acceptable in everyday life, and many places that once meant dresses, suits, or at least a polished outfit now have people showing up in jeans, sneakers, leggings, and sometimes even pajamas.
Here are some of the occasions that have become noticeably more casual over the years.
Air travel

Flying used to feel like an event, and people dressed accordingly. Dresses, heels, suits, ties, and hats were once common airport attire, a far cry from the sweatpants, leggings, and comfortable travel clothes commonly worn on flights today.
Going out to dinner
Going out for a nice dinner once meant putting a little more effort into getting dressed, even if the restaurant wasn’t particularly fancy. Today, jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers don’t look out of place at many restaurants that would have once called for a much more polished outfit.
Going to the theater
Seeing a play, musical, opera or symphony was an occasion to bring out nicer clothes. Theater attire has become considerably more relaxed, and jeans and other casual clothing are now common even at evening performances.
Church
“Sunday best” was once a very real part of the weekly routine. Dresses, skirts, dress shoes, hats and suits were standard church attire for many families, while jeans and other casual clothes are much more common today.
Funerals
Funerals traditionally called for dark, conservative and relatively formal clothing as a sign of respect. While many people still dress that way, jeans, casual shirts and other everyday clothing have become increasingly common at services.
Going to work
Office wardrobes once commonly meant suits, ties, dresses and other traditional business clothing. Many workplaces have gradually shifted from formal business attire to business casual and, in some cases, all the way to jeans, sneakers and other everyday clothes.

Going on a date
Going on a date used to give you a reason to pick out a nice outfit, fix your hair, and make the evening feel different from an ordinary night out. Dates have become much more casual, particularly when meeting for coffee, drinks or another low-key activity.
Going shopping
Heading downtown or spending an afternoon shopping once meant getting properly dressed before leaving the house. Nice trousers, skirts, dresses and good shoes were part of simply looking presentable in public, while today’s shopping trip might happen in leggings, sweats or whatever was already being worn at home.

Going to the doctor
A doctor’s appointment was once another reason to make sure you looked presentable before leaving home. Today, comfort and practicality tend to take priority, particularly when someone isn’t feeling well in the first place.
Holiday dinners
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other family celebrations once meant bringing out nicer clothes, even when dinner was at someone’s house. Holiday gatherings have become much more relaxed, with jeans, sweaters and comfortable outfits replacing the dresses, jackets and dress shoes that were once part of the occasion.
Dressing up isn’t necessarily disappearing
People certainly haven’t stopped dressing up altogether, but many of the unwritten rules about when it was expected have faded. What once required a special outfit can now happen in the same clothes someone might wear while running errands.
