There’s something fun about arriving at a yard sale before the crowds. A garage corner or a tarp-covered piece in the driveway might hold a well-made furniture find for very little money.
While plenty of shoppers head straight for collectibles and kitchenware, I usually check the furniture first. Older pieces often have solid wood, sturdy joints, and classic styles, and a few scratches or a faded finish may be easy to fix.
After years of browsing yard sales, these are the furniture finds I always look at closely when the price is right.

Solid Wood Dressers
A solid wood dresser can be a great yard sale buy because many older examples were made with sturdy materials and joinery. A worn finish may be fixed with sanding, stain, or paint, but check the drawers, runners, and joints before you pay.

Bentwood rocking chairs are known for their curved frames and lightweight feel. Check the joints and runners for looseness, since a wobbly rocker may need more repair than expected.
Cedar Chests
Cedar chests can store blankets, seasonal clothing, quilts, and keepsakes while serving as a bedroom accent. Check the hinges, lid support, and interior for dampness or musty odors before buying.
Tambour Desks
Tambour desks have a roll-top cover that slides open to reveal small drawers and compartments. Test the cover and drawers before paying, since repairs to the sliding mechanism may cost more than planned.
Corner Cabinets
Corner cabinets make use of an area that might otherwise sit empty. They can display dishes or collectibles, so check the shelves, doors, and back panel for damage before buying.
Antique Wood Coffee Tables
A solid wood coffee table can handle daily use and still look good with proper care. Check for loose joints, deep cracks, water rings, and repairs that might be difficult to fix.
Cast Iron Patio Furniture
Cast iron patio furniture is heavy and sturdy, making it a common find at yard sales. Surface rust may come off with sanding and fresh paint, but check for cracks, bent parts, and rust that has eaten through the metal.
Vintage Bookshelves
Older bookshelves made from solid lumber can hold plenty of books and decorative pieces. Check for sagging shelves, loose joints, and signs of water damage before buying.
Teak and Retro Dining Tables
Teak tables are prized for their durability and warm wood grain, while retro tables from the 1950s through the 1970s can give a dining area a classic look. Check for extension leaves and sturdy legs, especially if you need extra seating for family meals or holidays.
Steamer Trunks
Steamer trunks store blankets, board games, and seasonal decorations, and some can double as coffee tables or benches. Check the hinges, latches, interior lining, and odors, especially if the trunk has spent years in a garage or basement.
Vintage Rocking Chairs
A traditional rocking chair can work on a porch, in a nursery, or beside a fireplace. Look for a sturdy frame and smooth rocking motion; minor wear may be manageable, while loose joints may need repair.
