Few things are more frustrating than opening the dryer and finding your freshly washed sheets twisted into a giant knot. Not only do balled-up sheets come out wrinkled, but they also trap moisture, leaving parts of the fabric damp while the rest feels dry.
The good news is that this common laundry problem usually has a simple fix. If your sheets constantly tangle, twist, and wrap themselves around everything else in the dryer, these easy tricks can help keep them separated so they dry faster and come out looking much better.

Toss in Wool Dryer Balls
Wool dryer balls do more than soften laundry. As they bounce around inside the dryer, they help separate large pieces of fabric, preventing sheets from sticking together and wrapping around each other.
The extra movement improves airflow throughout the load, which can reduce drying time and help sheets come out with fewer wrinkles. For best results, add three to six dryer balls whenever you’re drying bedding.
Avoid Overloading the Dryer
Sheets need plenty of room to move around. When the dryer is packed too full, large items are forced together, making it easier for them to twist, bunch, and trap moisture.
A slightly smaller load often dries more efficiently than an overloaded one. If you’re washing bulky bedding, consider drying sheets separately from towels and other heavy items to give them more space.
Pay Special Attention to Fitted Sheets
Fitted sheets are often the biggest culprit when it comes to tangled laundry. Their elastic corners act like giant pockets that collect pillowcases, socks, washcloths, and other small items during the drying cycle.
Before putting a fitted sheet into the dryer, check the corners for trapped laundry and shake everything loose. Some people even loosely fold fitted sheets before drying to reduce the chances of them ballooning and swallowing other items.
Give Sheets a Good Shake Before Drying
One of the simplest solutions is also one of the most effective. Before transferring sheets from the washer to the dryer, give each piece a thorough shake to loosen folds and untangle any twisted sections.
This helps separate layers of fabric and improves airflow during drying. If you notice sheets beginning to twist midway through the cycle, pausing the dryer for a quick shake can help prevent a giant laundry knot from forming.
