People Are Renting Goats to Clear Overgrown Yards, and It’s Actually a Pretty Clever Idea

Forget the lawn mower. Apparently, you can hire a herd of hungry goats to clear your overgrown yard, and they’ll happily spend their days eating their way through unwanted vegetation.

It might sound unusual, but renting goats for landscaping is real. They’re especially useful for clearing thick brush, invasive plants, and areas that are hard to tackle with traditional equipment.

One renter recently discovered this firsthand when they came home to find seven goats wandering their backyard. The only problem? Nobody told them the goats were coming.

Seven goats showed up for yard maintenance

In a recent Reddit post, a North Carolina tenant described coming home to an unexpected surprise.

Seven goats were roaming around the backyard, surrounded by a temporary electric fence.

Naturally, the renter assumed someone’s animals had escaped and ended up on the property. But after contacting the landlord, they learned the goats were supposed to be there.

The landlord had hired a company that uses goats to clear overgrown vegetation. The back of the property had become covered with ivy, thick bushes, and vines, and the goats were brought in to eat their way through it.

According to the renter, the company planned to keep the goats there for at least five days. The temporary fencing blocked access to most of the backyard, and one of the animals had already knocked over two flower pots.

The tenant wasn’t particularly thrilled, especially since the lease included the backyard and no one had given advance notice.

The landlord, however, reportedly considered it no different from hiring someone to mow the lawn.

The internet was surprisingly jealous

You might expect people to sympathize with someone who unexpectedly found seven farm animals in their backyard.

Instead, many Reddit users thought the renter had gotten a pretty great deal.

Some said they’d love to have goats show up and do their yard work. Others joked about spending the next five days watching the animals, naming them, or inviting friends over to see their temporary backyard residents.

Of course, not everyone dismissed the renter’s concerns. Bringing animals onto a property without notice, especially when they might damage plants or keep someone from using their yard, is a legitimate frustration.

Still, the discussion introduced plenty of people to an interesting landscaping option they might never have considered.

The more you learn about how goats can help manage overgrown property, the more the idea makes sense.

Why goats are surprisingly good at clearing overgrown land

Goats are natural browsers, meaning they prefer eating leaves, shrubs, vines, and woody vegetation rather than grazing primarily on grass like sheep or cattle.

That makes them particularly useful for tackling areas where a regular lawn mower isn’t much help.

They can reach vegetation growing along uneven ground, steep slopes, and densely overgrown sections of a property. They also eat many plants that homeowners would otherwise have to cut back by hand.

Depending on the vegetation available, goats may help reduce:

  • Poison ivy and poison oak
  • Kudzu and other invasive vines
  • Blackberry brambles
  • Dense brush and woody shrubs
  • Unwanted saplings and leafy growth

They don’t necessarily eliminate these plants permanently. Many aggressive weeds and vines will grow back, particularly if their roots remain intact. You may need repeated grazing or additional maintenance.

But goats can make an impressive difference by knocking back heavy vegetation and making an overgrown area easier to manage.

You can actually rent goats for your own yard

Goat grazing isn’t limited to farms or large rural properties.

Some landscaping businesses specialize in bringing herds of goats to residential yards, commercial properties, parks, and other areas that need vegetation cleared.

A company typically evaluates the property, determines how many goats are needed, and sets up temporary fencing to keep the animals within the designated area.

The goats then graze for a set period, which might be several days or longer, depending on the property size, vegetation, and number of animals.

The grazing company should also arrange water, shelter when needed, regular animal checks, and safe handling. Once the work is finished, the goats and temporary fencing are removed.

It’s essentially a landscaping crew that eats its lunch while working.

There are some pretty good reasons to consider goats

One of the biggest advantages of using goats is that they can help manage vegetation without relying on herbicides.

They also don’t require gas-powered mowing or brush-cutting equipment while they’re grazing, which can make them appealing for certain properties. Goats are especially helpful where machinery would struggle to operate safely, such as on steep hillsides, rocky terrain, or in areas with thick vegetation.

In some communities, managed goat grazing also reduces dry brush and other vegetation that can contribute to wildfire risk.

Unlike mowing, which mainly cuts grass and low-growing plants, goats can reach up and nibble leaves from shrubs and vines. For homeowners dealing with a neglected section of their property, that can be a useful combination.

One thing to note, though: Goats don’t necessarily know the difference between an unwanted vine and your favorite landscaping plant.

They may happily nibble ornamental shrubs, garden vegetables, flowers, and young trees if they can reach them. Some plants are also toxic to goats, so you need to evaluate the grazing area for animal safety.

Move or fence off flower pots, garden beds, and other plants you want to protect before the goats arrive.

Is renting goats cheaper than hiring landscapers?

Not necessarily.

The cost of goat grazing depends on several factors, including property size, how much vegetation needs clearing, transportation, fencing, and how long you need the animals.

For a small residential yard, hiring a traditional landscaping crew may be more affordable and convenient.

But for large, steep, heavily overgrown, or difficult-to-access areas, goats may be a practical alternative worth comparing.

They can also reduce the manual brush clearing required, making the property easier to maintain.

Anyone considering the service should request a quote and ask what’s included, particularly fencing, animal care, cleanup, and protection for landscaping they want to keep.
