Dog owners are divided over whether you should clean your dog’s paws every time they come inside

If you have a dog, you know how quickly dirty paws can mess up your floors. Between daily walks, backyard playtime, and trips outside to use the bathroom, dogs can track in plenty of dirt without you even noticing.

Some dog owners make it a habit to wipe their pets’ paws every time they come inside, while others only bother when they see visible mud or dirt. But is cleaning their paws after every trip outside really necessary, or is it just another chore to add to the list?

Dog owners have very different cleaning routines

The question recently came up in a Reddit community discussion, where one person asked whether other dog owners cleaned their pets’ paws every time they came inside and what they used.

Some commenters said they wouldn’t let their dogs walk through the house without a quick wipe. They use pet-safe wipes, microfiber cloths, or a damp towel to remove dirt before their pets get comfortable on the furniture.

Others thought cleaning paws after every trip outside was unnecessary, especially for dogs that go in and out of the house throughout the day.

One person with three large dogs pointed out how impractical it would be to wipe 12 paws multiple times a day. Several others said they only bother when it’s raining, snowing, or muddy outside.

What do veterinarians recommend?

According to the American Kennel Club, cleaning your dog’s paws helps remove dirt, mud, sand, and other debris that can get trapped between their toes.

A damp washcloth or pet-safe wipe is often enough for everyday cleaning, but particularly muddy paws may need a rinse.

There are also health reasons to pay attention. VCA Animal Hospitals warns that winter deicing chemicals can irritate dogs’ paws and may harm pets if they lick them off. Cleaning their feet after walking on treated sidewalks can help remove the residue.

That doesn’t mean every dog needs a full paw wash each time they step outside. Checking their paws and cleaning them when necessary is a practical approach.

A simple trick for keeping floors cleaner

One of the most popular suggestions in the discussion was also one of the cheapest: keep old towels near the door.

Several dog owners said they repurpose worn-out bath towels and washcloths specifically for wiping muddy paws. Others use washable rugs near entrances to catch dirt before it spreads through the house.

It’s an inexpensive way to reduce dirty floors without constantly reaching for disposable wipes.

Whether you clean your dog’s paws after every walk or only when they’re visibly dirty, a simple routine can make keeping your home clean easier.
