Where you live may have a bigger impact on your health than you realize, and a new report suggests that some cities are far better positioned to support a healthy lifestyle than others.

According to a recent WalletHub study, several California cities are leading the way, with multiple cities ranking in the top 10 for overall health and wellness.

California Cities Take the Top Spots

Topping the list is San Francisco, which ranked as the healthiest city in the United States. Close behind is San Diego, followed by Seattle and Salt Lake City.

Several other California cities also made strong showings, including Irvine, Los Angeles, San Jose, and Fremont, highlighting a clear regional trend.

In total, California cities appeared repeatedly in the rankings, reinforcing the state’s reputation for access to outdoor activities, a health-conscious culture, and a strong wellness infrastructure.

What Makes a City “Healthy”?

To determine the rankings, WalletHub analyzed 182 of the largest U.S. cities across four major categories: health care, food, fitness, and green space.

The study examined 41 metrics, including the cost of medical visits, access to healthy food, physical activity levels, and the availability of parks and recreation.

Experts say that while personal habits matter, your environment plays a significant role in shaping those habits. Cities that make it easier to access nutritious food, exercise regularly, and spend time outdoors tend to see better overall health outcomes.

Why San Francisco is ranked No. 1

San Francisco stood out for several reasons, including low obesity rates, strong dietary habits, and widespread access to fitness opportunities.

The city also benefits from walkable neighborhoods, bike-friendly infrastructure, and a wide range of healthy dining options, including options for vegetarian and specialty diets. Combined with strong investment in parks and recreation, these factors helped push it to the top of the list.

A Clear Pattern Across Top Cities

Looking at the top 10, a pattern begins to emerge. Cities like Portland, Denver, and Honolulu all share similar characteristics: access to outdoor spaces, active populations, and a focus on wellness-friendly infrastructure.

These cities tend to make healthy choices more accessible, whether that means having nearby hiking trails, farmers’ markets, or fitness centers.

On the Other End of the List

While some cities are thriving, others are struggling.

Cities in the southern U.S. tended to rank lower overall, with places like Brownsville landing at the bottom of the list due to lower access to health care, fewer fitness opportunities, and higher rates of inactivity.

Experts note that these disparities often reflect broader challenges, including economic factors and access to resources.

Why This Study Matters

For many people, the findings reinforce a simple idea: your zip code can influence your health just as much as your daily habits.

Whether it’s the availability of fresh food, safe places to exercise, or access to affordable health care, the environment around you plays a major role in long-term well-being.
