I Shop at Trader Joe’s All the Time—Here Are My Best Tips

Trader Joe’s has a loyal following for a reason. The stores are smaller than most supermarkets, the staff is famously friendly, and the shelves are packed with unique foods you won’t find anywhere else.

After years of shopping there regularly, I’ve picked up a handful of tricks that make each trip easier and more enjoyable. Trader Joe’s works a little differently than traditional grocery stores, and once you learn how the store operates, you can avoid common frustrations and discover some seriously great finds.

Shop Midweek Mornings If You Can

Trader Joe’s can get incredibly busy, especially on weekends. If your schedule allows it, try shopping on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings when the crowds are usually lighter. The store feels calmer, shelves are freshly stocked, and you won’t have to battle for a parking spot. It makes the entire experience much more enjoyable.

Return Your Cart in the Parking Lot

Trader Joe’s parking lots are famously small and crowded. Leaving carts scattered around only makes it worse for everyone. I always return mine to the designated area before leaving. It takes less than a minute and keeps the lot safer.

Call the Store if You’re Looking for a Sold-Out Item

Some Trader Joe’s products develop almost instant cult followings. When something goes viral, it can sell out quickly and stay that way for days. If you really want something specific, call your local store and ask if they can hold it for you. They’ll usually set it aside for up to a day if it’s in stock.

Trader Joe’s employees are happy to help track down items, but the checkout line isn’t the best place to ask.
