The First Place I Check at Goodwill—It’s Where the Good Stuff Is (But Most People Skip It)

I spend a lot of time thrift shopping, and over the years, it’s become second nature to notice how things move through a store. You start to see which sections get picked over first, where items tend to pile up, and how quickly the good stuff disappears.

For the longest time, I had a pretty set routine. I’d head straight to the clothing section, grab anything that caught my eye, try it on, and then make my way through shoes, books, and home goods after that. It worked, but I also knew I was probably missing out on things that never even made it to the racks.

Recently, I started doing something different, and it completely changed how I thrift.

The First Place I Check Now

Before I even look at the racks, I go straight to the put-out carts and bins. These are the rolling racks and bins you’ll usually see scattered around the store as employees restock. Most people walk right past them or assume they’re off-limits, but they’re not. And that’s exactly why they’re so good.

Why This Spot Has the Best Finds

Everything on those racks hasn’t been picked through yet. It hasn’t been sorted by size, laid out on the floor, or browsed by a dozen other shoppers.

It’s the closest thing you’ll get to first dibs in a thrift store. If you’ve ever wondered how some people always seem to find the best pieces, this is usually part of it: they’re not waiting for items to hit the racks.

What You’ll Notice Right Away

The first time you check these bins or racks, it might feel a little chaotic. Things aren’t neatly organized, and you might have to dig a bit. But that’s kind of the point.

Most shoppers prefer clean, organized sections, so they skip anything that looks like extra effort, leaving many really good items untouched.

It Doesn’t Replace Your Routine—It Just Improves It

I still browse the racks. I still try things on. I still check all my usual sections. But starting with the put-out racks changes everything. It’s like getting access to a part of the store that most people don’t even realize they can shop in.
