When you think about valuable items thieves might steal, jewelry, electronics, and expensive handbags probably come to mind. But what about Hot Wheels cars, Pokémon cards, or LEGO sets?
Some of these childhood favorites are worth serious money, and thieves are taking notice. Recent thefts in Southern California have involved everything from boxes of toy cars to rare trading cards worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
According to a recent Los Angeles Magazine report, several high-value collectible thefts have made headlines, showing just how much money can be tied up in items many people still think of as toys.

Thieves Made Off With $54,000 Worth of Hot Wheels
In Colton, California, thieves reportedly stole approximately $54,000 worth of Hot Wheels merchandise from a freight train. Police recovered 350 boxes of collectible cars from a pickup truck just hours later and arrested a 20-year-old suspect.
While most people associate Hot Wheels with inexpensive toy cars, the stolen shipment’s value shows how much money can be tied up in collectibles.

Nearly $1 Million in Trading Cards Was Stolen
Hot Wheels weren’t the only collectibles targeted. Thieves also reportedly stole nearly $1 million worth of rare sports and trading cards from a delivery truck in Southern California.
The shipment included valuable Pokémon cards, some professionally graded. Rare trading cards in excellent condition can sell for thousands of dollars, making them attractive targets for thieves.
Pokémon Cards and LEGO Sets Are Also Being Targeted
Collectibles stores haven’t been spared, either. In Anaheim, thieves reportedly broke into a store and stole tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise, including rare Pokémon cards.
Thieves also targeted a LEGO store in Redlands, reportedly stealing more than $1,000 worth of collectible sets.
These incidents show that thieves aren’t always after traditional valuables. Toys and collectibles can be worth far more than their original retail prices.
Some Collectibles Have Sold for Millions
Some of the biggest collectible sales involve items that were previously stolen.
A rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, featuring Superman’s first appearance, sold for $15 million in 2026. The comic once belonged to actor Nicolas Cage and was recovered years after thieves stole it from his home.
The famous ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz also made headlines when they sold for $32.5 million in 2024. The shoes were stolen from a museum and later recovered.
Why Are Collectibles Worth So Much?
Rarity, condition, demand, and original packaging can all affect what collectors are willing to pay. A toy car might be worth just a few dollars, while a rare version could sell for considerably more.
Not every collectible is valuable, of course. But some items command surprisingly high prices.
