You’re Probably Forgetting to Clean These 9 Kitchen Items

A kitchen can look spotless at first glance. The countertops are clean, the dishes are put away, and the trash has been taken out. Still, some of the dirtiest places are the ones that rarely make it onto the cleaning checklist.

With daily cooking comes grease, crumbs, moisture, and food residue that collect in places many people forget to clean. Giving these overlooked spots a little attention every so often can help keep your kitchen cleaner, reduce odors, and prevent grime from building up over time.

1. Behind the Stove

It’s easy to forget about the narrow space behind the stove because you rarely see it. Yet grease splatters, crumbs, dust, and spilled food can pile up there surprisingly fast.

Pull the stove away from the wall every so often and give the floor and surrounding area a good cleaning. It helps keep pests away and removes grease that can become difficult to clean if left too long.

2. Garbage Disposal

Running water through the garbage disposal after washing dishes doesn’t actually clean it.

Small bits of food often stick to the inside, where they can produce unpleasant odors over time. Cleaning the disposal regularly helps keep your sink smelling fresh and prevents buildup from becoming a bigger problem.

3. Coffee Maker

If you make coffee every morning, your machine probably gets plenty of use but very little attention.

Mineral deposits from water and coffee oils slowly collect inside the machine, affecting both the taste of your coffee and the brewer’s performance. A thorough cleaning every so often helps everything work the way it should.

4. Inside the Dishwasher

A dishwasher spends its days cleaning dishes, but that doesn’t mean it stays clean itself.

Food particles, grease, and soap residue can collect in the filter, spray arms, and around the door seal. Cleaning these areas helps reduce odors and keeps your dishwasher running more efficiently.

5. Handles and Knobs

Cabinet handles, refrigerator doors, drawer pulls, and appliance knobs are touched countless times every day.

Hands covered in flour, raw meat juices, cooking oil, or sticky ingredients transfer residue to these surfaces without much thought. Wiping them down regularly helps prevent grime from building up.

6. The Kitchen Sink

Your sink handles dirty dishes, rinsed vegetables, raw meat packaging, and food scraps every single day.

Even if you wash dishes after every meal, the sink itself still needs regular cleaning. Giving the basin, drain, and faucet a good scrub helps remove food residue and keeps unpleasant smells under control.

7. Cutting Boards

A cutting board may look clean after a quick rinse, but deep knife marks can trap moisture and tiny food particles.

Boards used for raw meat deserve extra attention to help prevent cross-contamination. If a board becomes deeply grooved, cracked, or difficult to clean, replacing it is often the better choice.

8. Refrigerator Shelves and Drawers

Small spills inside the refrigerator are easy to overlook until they become sticky or start producing unpleasant odors.

Take time to remove shelves and drawers every so often so they can be washed properly. It’s also a good chance to toss expired food and forgotten leftovers before they create a bigger mess.

9. Dish Towels

Dish towels work hard throughout the day. They’re used to dry hands, wipe counters, clean spills, and sometimes even dry dishes.

Because they stay damp and come into contact with so many surfaces, they can collect bacteria faster than many people realize. Washing them frequently and replacing worn towels helps keep your kitchen cleaner.
