Tariffs and Inflation Are Making Home Repairs More Expensive for Homeowners

Owning a home has never been cheap, but keeping one in good condition is becoming more expensive than many homeowners expected. Rising prices for building materials, inflation, and tariffs are pushing repair and renovation costs higher, leaving many people rethinking projects they once considered routine.

A recent homeowner survey shows just how widespread the problem has become. About 60% of homeowners say tariffs are already making repairs and renovations less affordable, and many believe costs will continue to increase over the next year.

Rising Prices Are Changing Renovation Plans

Home improvement projects that once fit comfortably into the budget now require tougher decisions.

According to the survey, 73% of homeowners say they have changed their renovation plans because material costs have gone up.

Some have reduced the size of their projects, while others have postponed renovations until prices come down. Many are choosing less expensive materials or looking for ways to cut labor costs to keep spending under control.

Even homeowners who decide to move forward often end up paying more than expected. About 70% say their most recent renovation went over budget, largely because of higher prices and unexpected expenses.

Many Repairs Are Being Delayed

The rising cost of homeownership isn’t affecting only remodeling projects. Necessary repairs are being pushed aside as well.

Half of homeowners say they currently have repairs that need to be completed but can’t afford to tackle right now.

Delaying maintenance can save money in the short term, but it often creates larger problems later. Nearly two-thirds of homeowners admit they’ve postponed routine maintenance during the past few years, and 29% say waiting led to repairs that could have been avoided.

A small leak, loose shingles, or worn-out plumbing fixture can become a much bigger expense if left alone for too long.

Surprise Repairs Make Things Even Harder

Unexpected repairs remain one of the biggest financial challenges for homeowners.

About 85% say they’ve faced an unplanned repair within the past year. Whether it’s a broken water heater, roof damage, or an HVAC system failure, these repairs often arrive without warning.

Many families aren’t financially prepared. More than half of homeowners say they don’t have savings set aside for emergency home repairs.

Without an emergency fund, some homeowners have few options. Around 30% report taking on debt to complete a renovation or repair project.

Tariffs Are Raising the Cost of Everyday Repairs

Tariffs are affecting much more than large remodeling projects.

Many of the products homeowners buy for repairs and maintenance, including appliances, flooring, roofing materials, cabinetry, and furniture, have become more expensive.

That has caused many people to rethink how they spend money on their homes. Some are taking on more do-it-yourself projects, delaying upgrades, or focusing only on repairs that can’t wait.

Homeownership Is Becoming More Expensive

Keeping a home in good condition now costs more than it did just a few years ago. Inflation, higher material prices, and tariffs have made repairs and renovations harder to fit into many household budgets.

As costs continue to rise, homeowners are making difficult choices about which projects can move forward and which ones will have to wait. For many families, staying on top of home maintenance is becoming one of the biggest financial challenges of owning a home.
