Buying a house comes with plenty of surprises, but finding out your neighbors have a shortcut through your backyard probably isn’t one you’d expect.
That’s exactly what happened to one homeowner who recently shared their situation on Reddit. The previous owners had let their neighbors use a gate connecting their backyard to a nearby school’s athletic fields and parking lot.
The new homeowners decided to keep the arrangement in place to be neighborly. But things took an unexpected turn when the neighbors started demanding what they could and couldn’t do in their own backyard.

An Agreement With the Previous Homeowners
In a post shared on Reddit, the homeowner explained that their property backs up to a school with access to athletic fields and parking lots.
Their neighbors don’t have direct access to the school’s property, so they previously worked out an arrangement with the former homeowners. They even installed a gate in their own fence that opens into the homeowner’s backyard.
The setup lets the neighbors, their family, and their friends walk through a small section of the yard to reach the school parking lot instead of driving through the subdivision.
The homeowner estimated that the shortcut covers only about 15 feet between the two gates. Since it seemed harmless enough, they initially had no problem letting the arrangement continue.
Then the Neighbors Started Making Demands
The problems began when the neighbors started complaining about the homeowner’s dog. According to the post, the neighbors asked that the dog no longer poop or pee in the area they use as a shortcut. Apparently, their family members had been tracking dog waste into their own yard.
But the requests didn’t stop there.
The neighbors also complained that the homeowner’s compost bin was an eyesore and wanted it removed so their guests could have a more pleasant walk through the property.
Yes, the same backyard they were being allowed to use as a favor. The homeowner had ignored the complaints up to that point but was beginning to reconsider the entire arrangement.
“I’ve ignored it up to this point, but am so tempted to slap a lock on that gate,” they wrote, asking fellow Reddit users what they would do.
Reddit Users Think It’s Time to Lock the Gate
The post attracted thousands of upvotes and plenty of opinions, with most commenters agreeing that the neighbors had pushed their luck.
Many pointed out that the homeowners had no obligation to change how they used their backyard just to accommodate people passing through it.
Others suggested that the homeowners stop allowing access altogether, especially now that the neighbors were making demands about the property.
Several people also recommended a direct conversation before locking the gate, explaining that the arrangement no longer worked.
After all, there’s a difference between doing someone a favor and letting them dictate what happens in your own yard.
A Good Deed That May Have Gone Too Far
The homeowner initially saw no reason to end an arrangement that had worked for the previous owners. The shortcut was small, the neighbors benefited, and allowing them to pass through seemed like an easy way to maintain a good relationship.
But the complaints about the dog and compost bin changed things.
It’s one thing to ask permission to use someone else’s property. It’s another to expect them to rearrange their backyard to make that favor more convenient.
For anyone buying a home with an existing neighbor arrangement, the story reminds you to understand exactly what you’re agreeing to before deciding to keep it going.
