I spend a lot of time in thrift stores, and after doing it for years, I’ve picked up a few little habits that help me find things I might otherwise miss. You start to notice where shoppers tend to look first, which sections get picked over quickly, and where random items end up after they’ve been moved around the store.
One thing I almost always do now is look at the very top of the clothing racks when I walk in. It takes just a few seconds, but I’ve found enough interesting things up there that I rarely skip it.
It sounds like a strange place to search, especially when there are hundreds of items hanging right in front of you. But that’s exactly why it can be worth checking.

Why I Check the Top of Clothing Racks
Most shoppers walk into a thrift store and immediately start flipping through hangers. That’s understandable because the clothes are right there and there’s usually a lot to look through. With so much sitting at eye level, few people think to look above the racks.
The tops of those racks can become a temporary landing spot for all kinds of things. Someone might pick up an item, carry it around for a while, decide not to buy it, and leave it on the nearest rack instead of walking it back to its original section.
Store employees may also put things there while they’re sorting donations, rearranging displays, or trying to keep the aisles organized. An item can sit there for quite a while if nobody notices it.
That’s what makes the spot interesting. Something sitting a few feet above your head can be easy to miss, even if it’s something you’d normally stop to look at.
Some Surprisingly Random Items End Up There
I’ve come across all kinds of things sitting on top of clothing racks. You might find a piece of artwork, a decorative item, a bag, or something that clearly belongs in another part of the store.
I’ve also seen vintage clothing and other unusual pieces end up in these random spots. Sometimes an item may have been part of a display, while other times it looks like another shopper simply put it down and walked away.
That’s one reason I like checking these areas. You’re not necessarily going to find something great every time, but you can come across things that aren’t where you’d expect them.
It also fits with some of the other thrift store tricks I’ve picked up over the years. A lot of thrift shopping comes down to looking in places other people overlook, rather than assuming everything is exactly where it belongs.
Most Shoppers Don’t Think to Look Up
After years of thrifting, I’ve noticed that most people have a pretty predictable way of shopping. They walk the racks, check the shelves, pick up a few things, and move on to the next section.
There’s nothing wrong with shopping that way, but it does mean certain areas get very little attention. The tops of clothing racks are one of them.
Since they’re above eye level, items can sit there unnoticed for days. A quick glance takes little time, and you don’t have to stop your entire shopping trip to check.
Make Looking Up Part of Your Thrifting Routine
I wouldn’t say you need to walk into every thrift store expecting to find a hidden treasure above the racks. Sometimes you’ll look up and see nothing but empty space. Other times, you’ll spot something that makes you wonder how you missed it.
For me, it’s become one of those small habits that’s easy enough to repeat every time I shop. I check the racks, scan the shelves, and then take a quick look above me before moving on.
