Roommate Tries to Set Rules for When Tenant Can Use Shared Kitchen—Now There’s Drama

Living with a roommate usually comes with a few compromises. But for one renter, those compromises are starting to feel more like restrictions, and now they’re wondering if pushing back is the right move.

In a Reddit post, the tenant described an increasingly tense living situation with a roommate they say has become “a bit controlling,” especially in shared spaces.

What Started as Small Issues Has Escalated

According to the post, the tension didn’t start in the kitchen. The tenant says they’ve already made several concessions, including paying more for internet and using a specific (and more expensive) type of cat litter their roommate prefers. While those adjustments were frustrating, they initially tried to keep the peace.

But over time, the situation escalated into something much bigger, one that now affects how they live day to day.

The New Rule That Crossed the Line

The breaking point came when the roommate proposed setting specific times when each person could use shared areas like the kitchen and living room. In other words, there would be periods of the day when one person simply wouldn’t be allowed in those spaces.

While the tenant admits they already try to avoid getting in the way of cooking at off-peak hours and keeping to themselves, they say this new rule feels like a step too far.

This situation doesn’t exist in isolation. The tenant also described previous incidents where their roommate allegedly:

• Kicked them off the internet
• Threw their belongings off the shelves
• Restricted access to dishes
• Made accusations about how they care for their pets

Although some of these issues were later attributed to misunderstandings, the overall pattern has left the tenant feeling uncomfortable in their own home.

Reddit Had Strong Opinions

As expected, commenters didn’t hold back and many sided with the tenant.

Several pointed out that shared spaces are exactly that: shared. In most roommate situations, access to areas like the kitchen and living room isn’t something one person can unilaterally control.

Others noted that if someone wants complete control over their environment or to avoid all interaction, they may need to live alone rather than impose restrictions on others.

A smaller number of commenters suggested that limited scheduling could work if both parties agree, for example, by setting short windows during which one person has guaranteed private use while keeping the rest of the day open.

Still, most agreed that the current proposal seemed one-sided rather than a true compromise.

So… Are They Overreacting?

Probably not. While roommate living requires flexibility, it also comes with basic expectations, such as reasonable access to shared spaces you pay to use.

Being told when you can and can’t cook or relax in common areas crosses a line for many people, especially when it isn’t mutually agreed upon.

Some commenters encouraged them to set firm boundaries and refuse the arrangement altogether, while others suggested finding small ways to reduce conflict until they’re able to move out.

Given the broader issues in the household, many agreed that the long-term solution may simply be finding a different living situation.
