Having family stay over can be a great way to spend time together, but hosting involves more than putting fresh sheets on the guest bed. Someone has to get the house ready, plan meals, cook, clean up, and make sure everyone has what they need. When all of that falls on one person, even a welcome visit can start to feel like a chore.
That’s the situation one woman described in a Reddit post. She says her husband’s family visits frequently, and although she enjoys having them around, she’s grown tired of doing nearly all the work while her husband spends time with his relatives.
After their latest visit, she told him something needed to change. He didn’t take it well.

She says every family visit leaves her with more work
According to the woman, she initially welcomed her husband’s family into their home because she wanted them to feel comfortable visiting. Over time, though, she noticed that hosting had become almost entirely her responsibility.
Whenever his relatives came to stay, she prepared the guest room, cooked meals, cleaned, and handled everything else that needed to be done. Meanwhile, her husband was free to sit and socialize with his family.
The arrangement became especially frustrating after his relatives stayed for several days over a recent weekend. Once they left, she told her husband she didn’t want to host them for another extended visit unless they shared the responsibilities.
She wasn’t asking him to stop seeing his family or saying that his relatives were unwelcome. She simply wanted him to help with the work involved in having overnight guests.
Her husband says she’s making his family feel unwelcome
Instead of agreeing to share the workload, her husband became upset. According to the post, he accused her of making his family feel unwelcome and argued that her request was unreasonable because the visitors were his relatives.
She tried to explain that her issue wasn’t with his family. It was with the expectation that she would take care of everything whenever they stayed.
The disagreement left her wondering whether she was wrong to limit how long his family could visit without more help from him.
She turned to Reddit to ask whether her boundary was unreasonable, and commenters had plenty to say about the couple’s hosting arrangement.
Reddit commenters think her husband should take a turn hosting
Many commenters focused on the difference between enjoying a family visit and doing the work required to make it happen. Several suggested that the husband should take responsibility for an entire visit so he could experience everything his wife normally handles.
One commenter recommended assigning him the cooking, cleaning, and preparation tasks the next time his family comes over. Others went further, suggesting that she spend the weekend away and leave him to manage the visit himself.
Another commenter shared a rule their mother had introduced at home: whoever invites the guests is responsible for hosting them. In that family, the rule meant that if the father wanted friends to stay, he handled the cooking, cleaning, and entertaining rather than leaving it all to his wife.
Not everyone agreed on whether the woman should give her husband a list of tasks. Some thought writing everything down would help him understand how much work she does. Others pointed out that making the list would still leave her responsible for planning the visit, even if he completed the chores.
She wants to enjoy the visits, too
The woman’s request comes down to a simple point: she wants to spend time with her husband’s family without spending the entire visit working.
For her husband, having relatives stay over may feel like an opportunity to relax and catch up. For her, those same visits have come to mean extra cooking, cleaning, and preparation before she can even sit down with everyone else.
She hasn’t said that his family can never stay again. She’s asking for a different arrangement before their next extended visit; one where welcoming guests into their shared home is a shared responsibility, too.
