I Love Thrifting—Here’s What I Always Buy at the Thrift Store in February

February is a great time to stock up on essentials thanks to post-holiday sales, seasonal discounts, and end-of-season clearances. With fewer people shopping, retailers and thrift stores are focused on moving inventory, which often leads to better prices on everything from pantry staples to winter gear.

This is also when leftover holiday items and seasonal goods begin appearing at thrift stores. Winter clothing, Valentine’s décor, kitchen items, and early spring supplies are often marked down and easy to find. Shopping now helps you plan ahead, stretch your budget, and pick up items you’ll use throughout the year without paying full price.

I love thrifting in February, and these are the items I always look for at the thrift store.

Fitness Equipment and Apparel

As New Year’s resolutions fade, workout gear often gets donated. Hand weights, yoga mats, and basic exercise clothing are common finds and are usually in good condition.

As winter winds down, items like snow boots, jackets, and winter accessories may be marked lower or donated. Even if you don’t need them immediately, February is a good time to buy.

By February, coats, boots, sweaters, and cold-weather accessories are starting to lose demand, even though winter isn’t over yet. This is a good time to buy quality pieces at lower prices. I focus on durable fabrics and everyday items like gloves, hats, and warm socks that can be stored for next season.

Valentine’s Day Candy and Gifts

After the holiday passes, thrift stores often receive unopened candy, decorative tins, and themed gift items. Shelf-stable candy can last a long time, and containers or packaging can be reused later for storage or gifting.

Garden Supplies

Thrift stores frequently have hand tools that are lightly used or donated during winter cleanouts. I always check tools carefully for damage and look for name brands in good condition.

Baskets

Baskets are among my most consistent thrift finds, especially in February, when the selection is usually good. Smaller baskets work well for garden harvests or storage, while larger ones are useful for laundry or hauling produce. They’re easy to repurpose and last a long time.

Spring Clothing

Warm-weather clothing is often overlooked during winter, making February a good time to shop for it. I look for natural fabrics like cotton and linen, and it’s not uncommon to find sale tags still attached since demand is low.

Cleaning and Organizational Supplies

Kitchen linens, towels, and sheets can be cut into reusable cleaning rags, which are always useful during spring cleaning. I also check for cleaning tools and appliances, like steam or floor cleaners, that were barely used and priced affordably.

Plastic bins and caddies are another item worth thrifting. They’re helpful for organizing cleaning supplies by room and are much cheaper secondhand than buying new.

Unique Valentine’s Décor

Beyond standard Valentine’s decorations, thrift stores often carry red glassware, candles, and decorative items that can be reused year after year. Holiday décor in red or pink from other seasons can also work well for Valentine’s displays.

Easter Décor

Easter items start appearing early in thrift stores. February is a good time to find serving dishes, cloth napkins, baskets, and table décor before prices rise closer to the holiday.

Furniture and Home Goods

Furniture donations tend to increase as people start thinking about spring updates. February is a calmer month to shop for these items, which makes it easier to find solid pieces without feeling rushed.

Camping and Outdoor Gear

Off-season camping gear often shows up in thrift stores this month. Tents, backpacks, and outdoor cookware are usually priced lower now than they will be later in the year.

February is a good month to thrift cookware, especially cast iron. Many pieces are durable and can be cleaned up easily. Buying secondhand makes it possible to build a quality kitchen without overspending.
