Bury an Aspirin With Your Plants? Here’s Why Gardeners Do It

Gardeners are always coming across unusual tricks that supposedly lead to healthier plants and better harvests. One of the more unusual ones involves something you probably have in your medicine cabinet: aspirin.

The idea is pretty simple. Some gardeners put an aspirin tablet in the planting hole before adding a tomato, pepper, flower, or vegetable plant. People who swear by the trick say it can help plants deal with stress and may give them a little extra help against certain diseases.

But there’s some science behind the idea, too, although it’s not quite as simple as burying a pill and expecting a bumper crop.

Why Gardeners Are Putting Aspirin in Their Planting Holes

So what does aspirin have to do with plants?

Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid, which is related to salicylic acid. Plants naturally produce salicylic acid and use it as part of their defense response when they’re dealing with things such as disease, drought, insect damage, and other forms of stress.

Think of salicylic acid as part of the plant’s internal warning system. When a plant detects a threat, it can trigger a series of defense responses. Researchers have been studying this process for years because of its role in plant health.

Research has shown that salicylic acid is involved in what’s known as “systemic acquired resistance.” This is a natural defense response that can help plants respond more strongly to certain diseases after an initial trigger.

Some studies have also found that applying salicylic acid before plants are exposed to certain pathogens can reduce the severity of infection. That’s where the aspirin garden hack comes from.

Gardeners have tried aspirin in several ways, including adding it to planting holes, mixing it into water, and using diluted solutions as a foliar spray. The idea is that the salicylic acid-related compounds may help plants deal with stress from things such as heat, drought, or disease.

Does the Aspirin Garden Hack Actually Work?

This is where things get a little less certain.

There’s plenty of research on salicylic acid and plant defenses, but that doesn’t mean burying an ordinary aspirin tablet in your garden soil has been proven to produce the same results. Research specifically on aspirin tablets used this way is much more limited.

Tomatoes are probably the plant most often associated with the trick. Gardeners have claimed for years that aspirin can lead to bigger harvests and fewer problems with disease.

Some experiments have reported positive results, but other studies haven’t found a meaningful difference in plant growth or yield. So far, the evidence doesn’t support treating aspirin as a guaranteed way to grow healthier plants.

The amount used also matters. Adding more aspirin won’t automatically make the plant healthier. Too much can cause problems and may damage the plant, including leaf injury and stunted growth.

That makes the dosage an important part of any experiment. A treatment that might help at one concentration could cause problems at another.

So, Should You Bury an Aspirin With Every Plant?

Probably not.

There isn’t enough evidence to say that every tomato, pepper, flower, or vegetable plant needs an aspirin in its planting hole. The practice is better viewed as a gardening experiment than a proven shortcut.

Your plants will get far more from healthy soil, regular watering, enough sunlight, and good growing conditions than they will from a single tablet.

Good soil is a much better place to start. If you’re curious about the aspirin trick, there’s nothing wrong with testing it on a small number of plants and comparing them with untreated plants.

Just don’t expect a tiny tablet to do all the work. The basic stuff still matters most in the garden.
