Shopping at JOANN Fabrics was something I genuinely loved. It was the kind of place you didn’t rush through. JOANN had fabric you could touch, seasonal décor you could browse, and enough supplies for everything from sewing and quilting to knitting and DIY home projects.
You could take your time, walk the aisles, run your hands over bolts of fabric, and stumble across ideas you didn’t even know you were looking for. Whether I went in for one specific item or just to browse, I usually left inspired and carrying more than I planned.
With stores closing across the country, many people are left wondering where to shop next. While no single store replaces everything JOANN offered, there are still plenty of solid options both in person and online, depending on what you like to make. Whether you sew, knit, crochet, paint, or decorate, these stores can help fill the gaps.

Walmart
Walmart can be a useful budget option for basic craft supplies, simple fabrics, and last-minute needs. Fabric selection varies widely by store, but the online inventory is often more reliable. It’s a practical place for thread, simple tools, and budget-friendly supplies.
Etsy
Etsy is one of the most flexible alternatives because you can find fabric, yarn, patterns, and specialty supplies from many sellers. It’s especially useful for unique prints, small-batch supplies, and harder-to-find items. Just make sure to read descriptions closely and check shop policies.
Hobby Lobby
Hobby Lobby is one of the strongest in-person options for fabric by the yard. Most locations have a dedicated fabric section, along with yarn, craft supplies, and home décor. Prices are often competitive, especially with frequent sales.
If fabric shopping was a major reason you visited JOANN, Hobby Lobby may feel like the closest replacement.
Michaels
Michaels is often the closest alternative for general crafting needs. It’s a reliable option for floral supplies, yarn, embroidery floss, framing services, and seasonal décor. The store also carries a wide range of art supplies and organizational tools.
Fabric selection is limited in most locations, though more options are available online. Michaels works best for everyday craft supplies rather than fabric-heavy projects.
Blick Art Materials
If your JOANN trips were more about paint, drawing, or art supplies, Blick is a strong alternative. It tends to offer higher-quality art materials than general craft stores, along with a wide range of specialty supplies.
Hobbii
Hobbii is a strong online option for yarn, especially if you knit or crochet often and want variety, good sales, and bulk pricing. It’s a good replacement when you use JOANN for yarn but want more choices.
Yarnspirations
Yarnspirations is another good yarn source, especially for familiar brands and easy patterns. It’s a practical option for stocking up on basics, downloading patterns, and finding kits.
Spoonflower
Spoonflower is worth considering when you want custom prints or something specific you can’t find locally. It’s a strong option for statement fabrics, home décor projects, and one-of-a-kind patterns.
Blackbird Fabrics
Blackbird Fabrics is a favorite for garment sewing and well-curated fabrics. It’s a great option if you want a more boutique-style selection and sewing notions in one place.
Fabric Depot
Fabric Depot is another solid online option for apparel and home décor fabrics, often with clearance deals. This is a good place to check when you want options beyond big-box stores.
OnlineFabricStore
OnlineFabricStore feels like walking into an enormous warehouse, only digitally. The selection is wide, especially for home décor and upholstery fabrics, and browsing can take longer than you expect—in a good way.
It’s especially useful when you’re looking for durability, large quantities, or options that local stores no longer carry.
Thrift Stores
Thrift stores can be surprisingly useful for fabric, especially for curtains, tablecloths, linens, and oversized garments you can repurpose. The downside is inconsistency, but the upside is price and unique finds.

Estate Sales and Garage Sales
These are great for fabric stashes, sewing supplies, and craft-room cleanouts, especially if someone is downsizing a long-time hobby space. You can often inspect items in person and find unusual, high-quality materials at lower prices.

Local Fabric Shops and Local Yarn Shops
Smaller shops won’t always match the size of JOANN, but they often make up for it with better guidance, nicer materials, and the ability to see and feel fabric in person. If you sew or knit regularly, a local shop can become the closest thing to what JOANN used to be.
