Drinking Glasses and Mugs

One Reddit user noted that he always “Washes all cups and glasses before using them.” The concern isn’t just whether they’re rinsed, it’s how thoroughly they’re actually sanitized.
Decorative Comforters and Throw Pillows
The top layer of bedding is one of the biggest red flags for many travelers. Decorative comforters, blankets, and throw pillows are not always washed as frequently as sheets and pillowcases. One traveler summed it up bluntly: “Take the comforter off the bed. They don’t wash that.”

The Bathroom Floor Without Footwear
Walking barefoot in a hotel room, especially in the bathroom, is something many people avoid.

Drawers and Upholstered Furniture
Not all surfaces in a hotel room are cleaned equally. Drawers, sofas, and upholstered chairs are often overlooked during quick turnovers. Some travelers choose to live out of their suitcase instead of unpacking, especially for short stays.

The TV Remote Without Cleaning It
The TV remote is one of the most handled items in any hotel room and one of the least trusted. Many travelers wipe it down immediately upon arrival. One person mentioned sanitizing the remote along with light switches and door handles, while another said they place the remote in a plastic bag during their stay to avoid direct contact.

This is less about cleanliness and more about safety. Even travelers who take minimal precautions tend to agree on one thing: use every lock available. Deadbolts, chains, and swing bars are there for a reason.
Others go further, using door wedges, portable locks, or simple tricks like placing an object near the door so it will make noise if opened during the night.
The Room Without Checking the Exit Plan
Checking the evacuation map on the back of the door and noting the nearest exit is recommended by experienced travelers. One person explained they count the number of doors to the exit in case visibility is low during an emergency.
