9 Items In Your Kitchen You’re Forgetting to Clean (And It Shows)

It’s easy to feel like your kitchen is clean when the counters are wiped down, and the dishes are done. But some of the grimiest spots are the ones most people barely think about during their regular cleaning routine.

Because the kitchen gets used constantly, it doesn’t take much for crumbs, splatters, moisture, and bacteria to build up in overlooked places. Giving these forgotten items a little extra attention can help keep your kitchen fresher, cleaner, and a lot more sanitary.

1. Behind the Stove

The space behind the stove is one of the easiest places to ignore, mostly because it is out of sight and awkward to reach. Over time, grease, crumbs, and dust collect back there, creating a sticky mess that can attract pests and even become a fire hazard.

2. Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal may get rinsed every day, but that does not mean it is actually clean. Food scraps can cling to the inside, causing odors and buildup that make your sink area smell less than fresh.

3. Coffee Maker

Coffee makers are used constantly, but they are often only cleaned on the surface. Inside the machine, mineral deposits and old residue can build up, affecting the flavor of your coffee and slowing the brewing process.

4. Inside the Dishwasher

It is easy to assume the dishwasher stays clean because it washes dishes, but food particles and grease still collect inside. The filter, spray arms, and door edges can all hold buildup that causes odors and keeps the machine from working as well as it should.

5. Handles and Knobs

Cabinet pulls, drawer handles, fridge doors, and appliance knobs are touched all day long. Since they are often handled while cooking, they can easily pick up food residue and bacteria from unwashed hands or raw ingredients.

6. The Kitchen Sink

Even if you wash dishes every night, the sink itself still needs attention. It comes into contact with dirty dishes, food scraps, produce, and messy hands, which makes it one of the easiest places for grime and germs to build up.

7. Cutting Boards

Cutting boards can look clean even when they are not fully sanitized. Knife grooves and small cracks can trap moisture and bacteria, especially if the same board is used for both raw meat and fresh produce.

8. Refrigerator Shelves and Drawers

The fridge keeps food cold, but spills, leaks, and forgotten produce can still leave behind a mess. Drawers and shelves are easy to overlook, and once sticky residue or mold starts building up, it can affect the freshness of everything around it.

9. Dish Towels

Dish towels get reused all day for drying hands, wiping counters, and cleaning up spills. Because they stay damp and are moved from surface to surface, they can quickly become among the dirtiest items in the kitchen.
