What to Do When You Can’t Let Go of Things You’re Keeping “Just in Case”

If you’re struggling to let go of things you “might need someday,” you’re definitely not the only one. It usually comes from a good place, wanting to be prepared, not wasteful, or not have to buy something again later.

But over time, those items start piling up, and instead of feeling prepared, you just feel stuck. Drawers fill with things you forgot you even had, boxes sit untouched for years, and your space starts to feel more like storage than a home.

The frustrating part is that you know you’re not using most of it, but letting go still feels uncomfortable. That’s because it’s not really about the item; it’s about the “what if.” But at some point, “just in case” turns into “just taking up space.” Letting go isn’t about being wasteful; it’s about making room for how you actually live right now.

Remind Yourself You Can Replace It

One of the most repeated ideas is simple: if you ever need it again, you can buy another one. Most everyday items are easy and inexpensive to replace, and many people say they’ve rarely (if ever) had to rebuy something they let go of. Letting go now is often worth far more than holding onto something for years “just in case.”

Ask If It’s Easy to Find Again

Instead of focusing on the item itself, think about how easy it would be to replace. If it’s common, inexpensive, and available at any store or online, it’s usually not worth storing long-term. Save your space for things that are truly hard to replace or genuinely useful.

Put It in a “Maybe Box”

If you’re not ready to let go completely, give yourself a buffer. Put uncertain items into a box, label it with a date, and store it out of sight. If you don’t go back for anything after a set period has passed, donate the entire box without reopening it.

Stop Treating Your Home Like Storage

One perspective that really sticks: your home isn’t a warehouse. Stores already hold millions of items that “might be useful someday,” and you don’t need to store them all yourself. Let the store hold onto it until you actually need it.

Consider the Cost of Space

Everything you keep takes up space, and that space has value. Some people find it helpful to think about how much each square foot of their home costs. When you compare that to the cost of replacing an item, it often becomes clear that storing it long-term isn’t worth it.

When your space supports your life instead of storing your “what ifs,” everything feels a little lighter.
