I Started Buying Basics Household Items at Dollar General and Saw the Savings Add Up

The prices are low, it’s convenient, and you can pick up a variety of items in one stop. That’s Dollar General. For quick essentials, it definitely has its place, but I’ve learned that not everything there is truly a bargain. Some items don’t last as long, some come in smaller sizes than expected, and others end up costing more over time.

Once I started paying closer attention and being more selective about what I buy, I began to see where the real savings are.

Here are the items I’ve found that are actually worth buying at Dollar General.

Party supplies and gift wrap

Gift bags, tissue paper, wrapping paper, and balloons are among the easiest wins. I used to spend way more at other stores for items that were used once and tossed.

Now I check Dollar General first, and most of the time, I find what I need for much less. If you’re planning ahead, this is also a good place to stock up and link to affordable party supplies and gift wrap options.

Cleaning supplies

For everyday cleaning, I’ve started grabbing basics like sponges, dish soap, and all-purpose cleaners here. Not everything is worth buying, but many simple items work just as well as pricier versions. It’s one of those areas where small savings happen over and over again.

Disposable kitchen items

Foil, plastic wrap, parchment paper, and freezer bags are things I used to grab without thinking about the price. Switching to buying these at Dollar General has been an easy way to cut costs. They may not be premium quality, but for everyday use, they get the job done.

Small grocery items

I don’t rely on Dollar General for full grocery trips, but it’s great when I only need a small amount of something. Instead of buying a large package that might go to waste, I can grab just what I need. This has actually helped me cut back on food waste while spending less up front.

Snacks, candy, and drinks

This is one of the biggest differences I’ve noticed. Snacks, candy, and individual drinks are often cheaper here than at grocery stores or gas stations. I’ve gotten into the habit of stopping in for these instead of grabbing them on impulse elsewhere.

Storage containers and household basics

Simple items like storage bins, utensils, and small kitchen tools don’t need to be expensive. I’ve found plenty of functional options that work just fine for everyday use. Now I always check Dollar General before heading to a bigger store.

Personal care basics

Cotton pads, Q-tips, and other basic toiletries are another area where I’ve cut back. If you’re not set on a specific brand, there are plenty of options that do the job. These are things you go through regularly, so the savings build over time.

Craft essentials

If you do any DIY projects or have kids, this is a great category to check out. Glue sticks, paint, brushes, paper, and seasonal craft kits are much cheaper here. I’ve also found jars, ribbon, and simple décor pieces that work well for projects.

Basic school supplies

Notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, and markers are all easy to find at lower prices. These are items that get used up or lost quickly, so it doesn’t make sense to overpay. I’ve started grabbing extras to keep on hand instead of making last-minute runs.

Greeting cards and seasonal items

Greeting cards are one of those things that used to feel overpriced everywhere else. At Dollar General, I can pick up cards for a fraction of the cost, and they still look nice. The same goes for seasonal décor; it’s affordable and works well for short-term use.

Everyday household essentials

Batteries, tape, pens, and other small items are easy to overlook, but they add up. I used to grab them wherever I happened to be, usually paying more than I needed to. Now I make a point to check Dollar General first.
