Kitchen counters have a way of becoming clutter magnets. A few papers get tossed down, an appliance stays out “just for now,” and before long, the space that’s supposed to make cooking easier starts feeling crowded and stressful.
But you don’t need a picture-perfect minimalist kitchen to fix the problem. You just need a few better habits and a more intentional approach to what actually deserves space on your counters.

Start by Clearing Everything Off
The easiest way to reset your counters is to remove absolutely everything. Appliances, utensil holders, paper piles, decorative pieces, and random everyday clutter all need to come off so you can actually see the space you’re working with.
At first, the empty counters may feel strange or even too bare. But after a day or two, most people notice how much calmer, larger, and easier the kitchen suddenly feels.
Only Put Back What You Truly Use
Once your counters are clear, resist the urge to put everything back immediately. Instead, slowly return only the items you use regularly and genuinely need within easy reach.
You may realize you don’t actually use the toaster every day or that the stand mixer could live in a cabinet instead of permanently taking up valuable prep space.
Find Better Storage Solutions
Counter clutter often happens because there isn’t an obvious home for things. Decluttering cabinets and drawers can free up far more storage space than you expect.
Cooking utensils can often fit into a drawer organizer, small appliances can go into lower cabinets, and knives may fit better in a drawer insert rather than a bulky block that sits out all the time.
Stop Treating Counters Like Drop Zones
One of the biggest causes of countertop clutter is using the kitchen as a temporary dumping ground. Mail, receipts, keys, bags, and random items get placed there “for now” and quietly stay for days.
Creating designated homes for everyday items makes a huge difference. A mail sorter, key hook, or small entryway basket can help prevent clutter from spreading throughout the kitchen.
Use the One-Minute Rule
If something takes less than a minute to put away, do it immediately. Hanging up a dishcloth, tossing junk mail, or putting away a spice jar may seem minor, but those little tasks are what keep clutter from building up again.

Get the Family Involved
Keeping counters clear works much better when everyone in the house participates. If family members are used to leaving things on every flat surface, changing those habits takes teamwork and consistency.

Limit the Number of Appliances Left Out
Small appliances are one of the biggest counter-space thieves. Coffee makers may earn their spot, but appliances used only occasionally usually don’t need permanent countertop real estate.
Keeping only your most-used appliances out makes the kitchen feel more open and gives you more room to actually cook.
Store Spices in Cabinets or Drawers
Countertop spice racks may look attractive at first, but they can quickly make a kitchen feel visually crowded. Heat and sunlight also cause spices to lose flavor faster.
A drawer insert or cabinet shelf keeps spices fresher while giving your counters a cleaner appearance.
Keep Mail and Paperwork Off the Counter
Paper clutter spreads faster than almost anything else in the kitchen. Bills, school papers, receipts, and grocery lists pile up quickly, making counters feel chaotic.

Be Careful with Decorative Clutter

Choosing one or two pieces you genuinely love often looks better than filling every empty corner.
